First album you got by your favorite artists?

Postby pcqgod » 11 Mar 2020, 02:54

Pick some of your favorite artists and list the first album you got by them. Bonus question: Are there any favorites where you can remember the order in which you bought each of their classic releases?

Some random favorites:

Ramones - Subterranean Jungle
Led Zeppelin - I
King Crimson - Beat
Elvis Costello - My Aim in True
Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady
The Doors - s/t
Bowie - ChangesOne
Sonny Rollins - Newks Time
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

The Yes album : Yes.
Foxtrot : Genesis
Blue : Joni Mitchell
The hazards of love : The Decemberists
Roxy Music : Roxy Music
My aim is true : Elvis Costello
The Smiths : the Smiths
After the goldrush : Neil Young
Something/Anything : Todd
Chameleon in the shadow of night : Peter Hammill
Ziggy Stardust : Bowie

Too many more. What's interesting is that only the Smiths and Costello were debuts, so there were interesting back catalogues to explore for the others

The Who - Who's Next (it may have been Meaty, Beaty.... though?)

For me it was often a case of filling in gaps in my older brother's collection so we could share. These first few are definitely a case of that:

Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother
Yes - Time and a Word
Genesis - A Trick of the Tail
Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn

Other times it was artists I didn't start to really like until a few albums into their career although I'd bought some singles:

Kate Bush - Never Forever
XTC - The Big Express
Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring
Porcupine Tree - The Sky Moves Sideways

Beatles - Yellow Submarine
Beach Boys - 15 Big Ones
Robert Wyatt - Nothing Can Stop Us
Elton John - Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player
Steeleye Span - Below the Salt
Kevin Ayers - Yes, We Have No Mananas

To be absolutely truthful, my first Elvis Costello was a cassette with 'My Aim is True' on one side and 'Imperial Bedroom' on the other, recorded by one of my older brothers. A lot of my firsts that became longtime faves were on C-90's --- Split Enz 'True Colours', Talking Heads 'More Songs', the aforementioned Costello and King Crimson albums, plus also had compilations from Buffalo Springfield and Buddy Holly.
