Music Magazine Cover Disc Discoveries.

Postby soundchaser » 10 Mar 2020, 09:28

I was a big fan of the heyday of magazines such as Q and Mojo and loved listening to the cover discs: I found many songs that were to become firm favourites. My first selection, is by long obscure mid-1990s band, Subcircus. The song is 86'd and I immediately fell in love with the synth part at the beginning. I liked the song so much, I looked up the album it came from, Carousel, which, it seems, had bombed. I got the album for 1p from Amazon Shops and really liked it. So, a very good find:

No takers yet? Well here's another discovery I made that turned into a very good (and cheap) album purchase:

Very much in the Teenage Fanclub vein.

I think I bought that album and didn't like it much. I'll have to have a look and see if I've still got it.
Mind you, I never did care much for Teenage Fanclub...

I have got excited about tracks off freebie CDs in the past but I really can't remember any off the top of my head.I'll think about it.
Bugger off.

I saw them once, cambridge junction 1998/99-ish they were an indie equivalent of the beach boys, really tight harmonies they also did a punk rock version of Rush - Xanadu which was quite snazzy

found a version here ....

Ha, that was a lot of fun! Thanks for posting. I will definitely listen to that a few times.

It will make Carlsson’s toes curl, though .

I think it might have been the very first (certainly an early) Mojo CD that had a song (possibly Pale Red) by Jerry Burns... so I bought the album. I would post a link but I’ve forgotten how.
It was raining when we drove up the two-lane highway through the long tunnel of trees that led into the black district on the south end of St. Martinville.

Over the years there certainly were several discoveries I'm sure.

But when I heard Jackie Leven's The Sexual Loneliness of Jesus Christ I became a fan for life.

Nice choice. I’ve got this one, too. I’m not the biggest soul fan, but this CD was a good comp.

I’ve just dug this one out for a chilled out breakfast listen.

It’s going to set me up for the day nicely...not that I’m going to want to do anything afterwards.

Lead me to the subbed, someone.

I didn't get that fave freeby and there are a half dozen tracks I don't have that are on it including the obscure and very good Soul Children version of the Bill Withers written song "Who Is She And What Is She To You?" and the Don Julian & The Larks version of the Barrett Strong and Norman Whitfield song "Message From A Black Man" which was part of the soundtrack for the Blaxploitation movie "Shorty The Pimp"

This is one of my very favourite Q Magazine discoveries. Excellent Power Pop from a band I know absolutely nothing about:

I did the same, bought album on cassette because it was cheap! "Pale Red" had a Blue Nile feel to it.
Coincidentally the album was produced and co-written by the late Bobby Henry who was the gun for hire producer for a lot of Scottish artists of the time £50 a day if it was an 8 track studio and a £100 a day if it was a 24 track studio.

Jerry Burns is still doing her thing and can be heard as the singer in this atmospheric track from 2010

I got into Jackie after hearing Single Father on a freebie cd. Although I had seen Doll by Doll live twice.
