Lyle Mays R.I.P.

Postby Six String » 11 Feb 2020, 17:28

Nephew announced it on his Facebook page. Passed yesterday morning apparently. For those who might not be familiar, he was the keyboardist for The Pat Metheny Group for many years. Although I didn't listen them a lot he was a good musician who was integral to the group's sound.

Very sad new. He was always a frail looking guy at the best of times but he made some beautiful music and was the perfect foil for Metheny and it's no coincidence that pretty much all my favourite Metheny albums include Mays either as part of the Pat Metheny Group, or just the two of them as on my favourite of all As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls. He had a lightness of touch and a cool, atmospheric style with little in the way of showboating which he was more than capable of.

Sadly I don't have any solo album of his but I will be playing the aforementioned As Falls Wichita album which includes September Fifteenth posted earlier and the gloriously atmospheric title track (which I can't find on YouTube so I've posted one of his solo tracks instead).
