2019 top tunes No. 4: Billy Eilish

I can't imagine her being terribly popular around here and I must admit to being in two minds myself.

On the one hand, I love Bad Guy; it's funny, witty and poppy and she's got a wicked way of singing, all sly and mean. I suspect this is the sort of image that Avril Lavign was aiming for but just came across as an obnoxious brat whereas I find Billy Eilish lovably evil.
And her brother is very annoyingly talented and successful.

On the other hand, when I listen to the album it all sounds the bloody same. Her smokey vocal is a great trick but maybe it's the only trick she's got and I find it rather wearing after a couple of songs. I've only listened to it twice so far but I can't see it growing on me.

Anyone care to give their opinion?

Yes. Certainly

I am getting too old....!

The beat was quite pleasant and the voice interesting - does she always sing like that?

I didn't like the video - why the blood?

What am I missing?

I am wary of anybody that has 'Pirate' as a middle name!

I have no desire to hear it again

I haven't heard the albums, but the songs that I have heard heard are not bad (for - you know - modern music) and when I' see her interviewed I think "I like her - has a good head on her shoulders, she should do alright."

For what that's worth.

Signed to Apple, promoted via Apple...it's designer tapestry for the new age.
Glad she won at the Grammys just because she seems nice. Her music is just not doing it for me. That whole Lana Del Reij/FATM-ennui bores me to death.

I've seen this video before: what a load of old bollocks. And such dull music.

The synth line was quite nice, but they are easy to do.

She wouldn't attract this old guy. Way too much of a skank for me.

As far as I can tell, yes. As I've said, I find it annoying after a bit.

I rather enjoyed the video. No idea about the blood though. Must be some 'young people' thing.

Well, you probably will. She won all the Grammys do it'll be everywhere. Again.

I love her. In my best of 2019 playlist that I compiled last year I kicked off the sequence with Kim Gordon and then her, and I loved the confluence of the two of them. That said, I have no idea how much of a "talent" she is per se, ie. how much of this is coming from her and her artistic sensibilities - it's hard not to be sceptical sometimes. But I'll definitely be watching out what she does next - Llana Del Rey had a pretty major backlash against her when she broke, but she has if anything been getting better and better (and produced a great album last year). Here's my playlist anyway if anyone is interested - it's long, but there was plenty of good stuff last year and I spent far too long getting the sequence the way I wanted it!

What’s a skank?

Skank
INFORMAL•NORTH AMERICAN
1. a sleazy or unpleasant person.
2. a steady-paced dance performed to reggae music

Get the vibe and the lyrics are okay but the snapping is extremely annoying.
There is just nothing interesting to the backround music, bland pop music to my ears.

Oh! I knew about the dance, but I don't think I knew what the other term meant.

I know what skank means now!

So, what do you mean she wouldn't attract you? And in what way is she a skank?

Well, now that we've all found out what a "skank" is (I had no idea), what's the poor girl done to deserve that!?

Actually I should probably refine this slightly as I've only ever heard it used to describe females

From our friends at the Urban Dictionary

"Derogatory term for a (usually younger) female, implying trashiness or tackiness, ... Can apply to any race, but most commonly used to describe white trash. ... a person who always thinks they look good, but in reality, they look like shit. mostly"

I think its use also implies some level of general "sluttiness"

This may or may not help in understanding how the term applies to Ms Eilish :?

Excellent! I've queued it up. It has about 10 songs the same as mine.
I'm following you on Spotify (I think!) so you can have a look at my list if you like.

And I'll be posting songs from a couple of people you've mentioned before long.

I’m not a fan but my daughters worship her (and Finneas to a lesser extent).

She was impressive at Reading last year though.

And rather than being a skank - she’s only 17 FFS! - she’s a positive role model on the whole as far as I can see.

You middle-aged curmudgeons making skank comments about little Billie need to watch yourselves. You've attracted the ever-watchful eye of precious Sloopjohn over at preludin and he
does

not

approve.
