2019 top tunes No. 3: Deerhunter

Postby Rorschach » 27 Jan 2020, 13:30

This was the first track off last years album, Why hasn't everything already disappeared?

I really wanted to like them more than I do because they seemed like 'proper' music.

I know what I mean...

Anyway, they remind me a bit of the Beau Brummels (who I reckon are a hugely underrated band) and they have the same problem form: I can't quite like the singing. I can't put my finger on why but it has something to do with me not being able to believe hime.

Anyway, having said that, I do love this track. I love the daft, simple riff that just bipples along in the background, and the way the track builds without ever getting hysterical.

Any fans here?

Bugger off.

What happened to no. 2 lad....?

Yes, I think they class as 'proper music'

I think youngsters like Lord Rother have talked about them on Reap Corner.

Certainly broad church prog. I liked it - interesting tubs and the correct credentials

Just about okay in length too and on the robustness scale 8/10

oooof!

Yet another fave from last year ( I do own all their other albums, so I'm not fresh to them )

Another band I band I got to see last year, at the Roundhouse with Cate Le Bon...they've been a band I've wanted to see for so long (I missed them supporting Halcyon Digest and they've cancelled their last two visits to London) and while I think I missed the boat of their heyday a bit, they were still very good - much tighter and groovier than I expected.
I love Elemental - great little tune.

Any recommendations from their heyday?

I'm hopeless with titles so I had to look it up. Yes, it's one of my favourites off the album. I found an audio only clip on Youtube from 2017 while I was looking. It was splendidly weird.

I've listened to sooooo little new music for the last 30 years. I've got a lot of catching up to do...

I like everything from Halcyon Digest, but Desire Lines is a particular fave of mine - one of my favourites of the 10s. I remember GuyE being hugely into them.

hey I was at that show!

One of my favorite albums from last year. This is a good example from the album.
Still think Halcyon Digest is their best but they have a number of good songs.

I'm afraid they didn't have an album out last year, otherwise...

Maybe this year?
