I'm by no means a Rush fan but absolutely adore "Permanent Waves" (after The Slider persuaded me to give it a spin). My brother is a pretty decent drummer and thinks the sun shone out of his arse - not my brother's, not The Slider's...Neil Peart's. So I have a huge amount of respect for the man because, by holy christ, he could play drums quite brilliantly.

RIP Neil - gone way too soon.

I heard this around half an hour ago. Our local radio station is scrambling to get Rush songs on air right now.

This is the first that I've heard about the brain cancer.

A few minutes after hearing that Neil Peart had died, I found out that Edd "Kookie" Byrnes died yeaterday.

I loved Rush, saw them live before they had released anything in the UK. Albums were only available on import. Neil was a fantastic drummer. He was also a great writer. His books about his travels and dealing with the deaths of his daughter and wife in quick succession was very honest and hard to read at times.

I saw them on their last few tours with my son, playing close to 3 hour sets every night. The man was a machine.

Sleep well.

Oh wow, what terrible news to wake up too. I had no idea of his illness.

I love a bit of Rush, even up to recent times they came out with strong albums and Peart was the heart of the band, the lyricist and driving force with his uncredible and intricate but always listenable drums and a huge variety of other percussion - in fact he seemed happy to bang away on pretty much anything.

A sad sad loss RIP :(

That was the very phrase (adjusted for tense) that was bandied about with my friends in the car on the way home from seeing them on the "Tour Of The Hemispheres" (1979) - the only time I saw Rush.

As I've said before, I'm glad not every drummer plays like him, but he was the perfect drummer for that particular band, and I'm glad they found each other. R.I.P.

Not a huge Rush fan, but what a fantastic drummer, with the best moustache in music. Very sad.

Very sad news indeed. I understood that he had retired from music possibly due to health reasons, but had no idea how serious his condition was.

I never did get to see Rush in concert, and I can't see Lee and Lifeson reforming the band without him.

Rush was BIG for me when I was a kid/teenager and I'd gotten back into them pretty recently. I gotta say that nowadays a little of that Ayn Rand shit goes a long way for me, but old Neil Peart seemed to at least not be a dick about it.

Am I right that he seemed to reign in his showier tendencies in playing during his later years?

A little, there was still a 'drum solo' slot but why not, he was sublime.

RIP Neil (or should that be YYZ)
