Who gets a free pass in music?

Postby GoogaMooga » 08 Jan 2020, 22:40

Whom do you give a free pass, like or tolerate it all, right down to the last bum note? Artists or bands where you have just got to have it all. They can do no wrong in your book.

Beach Boys
Beatles
Byrds

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

NOBODY!!

There are those - Dylan's a big one - whose failures are usually at least interesting. Usually.

I don't currently own Under the Red Sky on any format, though. And I'm OK with that.

The idea that artists are infallible in any way - even the ones I love the most - is offensive to me. Not healthy for fan or artist.

The Beatles (but they really never did much wrong).
XTC
Steven Wilson

I own everything by Mike Oldfied but he doesn't get a free pass as I consider an awful lot of it to be shit.

Agreed, but IMHO they haven't produced anything that would need to be excused.

The lower the album count, the easier this question can be answered....for instance Nick Drake....three peerless albums.

I very very seldom feel the need to hear their first two LPs anymore.
What's that one, 'My Weapon' (?) - that wants excusing.

I consider myself a big XTC fan. Own all their albums, a box set, etc. But when I was making my top ten lists for the '70s and '80s on my current thread, I only included Skylarking for 1986 and Oranges & Lemons for 1989. So even something like Black Sea, which I think is a very good album, wasn't quite good enough to make the grade in 1980 compared to other, better albums that year.

That is all.

XTC were too uneven for me and I like lots of their catalog.
Dylan is pretty much a lock for me but I'm not that impressed by some of his works but will still listen to them
Daevid Allen - yes I'm a weird bird but I love so many of his side projects. Did he do some crap (yes) but I still listened.
The Grateful Dead - prior to Jerry passing they did some bad songs but nothing I couldn't listen too.
Neil Young and Peter Gabriel would be two I'll listen to anything new by them.

There's quite a few to be honest, probably too many to mention.

I give their first couple of albums a free pass but regarding everything else I agree with you.
