How many "new" genres were introduced in the 1970s?

Postby GoogaMooga » 03 Dec 2019, 19:52

Hello! Hello. Digging a bare-bones 20 tracker by Sweet (also known as The Sweet), and man, the memories. It was great to be a kid in those days, experience all that new music unfold in real time.

Really, did any other decade offer as much diversity, introduce as many new genres? I put "new" in quotation marks, because there were for the most part forerunners to the big genres that emerged full force in the 1970s.

Let's list, let's do this thing:

glam
prog
punk
hair metal
disco
rap
industrial
electronica
dub reggae
salsa
AOR
pub rock
new wave
post punk
soft rock
wimp rock
yacht rock
quiet storm
fusion
electro-funk

It would be interesting to list how many genres (or sub-genres) were introduced in the '90s. Hundreds! (And none as interesting as at least 3/4 of this list.)

Great thread idea, GM. Quite a few favourites of mine here and I’ll admit to disco and yacht rock as guilty pleasures.

There, I’ve said It.

I forgot psychobilly and hardcore, but I am not sure if they were 70s or 80s.

Okay, what would you call early electronic bands like Kraftwerk then?

German.

When we were at school 75-79. Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream were referred to as German rather than any particular genre.

I think we just called it synth music, or syntheseizer music
