I'm a fan of Fat Possum Records (even have a Fat Possum Records T-shirt) ... You might like The Heartless Bastards (great name). I have their CD "The Mountain" and recommend it. We saw The Heartless Bastards in 2009 when they opened for The Decemberists.

Either band might be interesting.

Fat Possum Records is also where we first became aware of the Black Keys but they are more blues than rock. All this was around ten years ago, so I don't know what you are familiar with today.

We sometimes pick up Mojo and/or Uncut magazines. Their "free CD's" seem to be either very bad or at times have some interesting bands.

Black Midi, Fontanes DC and the Murder Capital are deservedly all over the best of 2019 lists. Black Midi turn out to be graduates of our performing arts school, which spoils the fun a little, and twats to boot, when they were on Mark Riley this week, but the songs were fantastic.


W.H. Lung are at the top of two polls from online stores, but they would only appeal to people who still feel sad that Flowered Up split up.

One of my favourite videos is of Beirut doing Nantes with Zac walking down the old stone stairs into a basement where the rest of the band are playing - although he passes a couple playing brass on the stairs I think.

Hightea: thanks very much for posting these links and suggestions. I'll take them one at a time. I've heard of War On Drugs, but never actually listened to them before. I have to say, i really enjoyed this song. Great playing and a tune to really groove to. Funnily enough, the bass player looks quite a bit like my youngest son, who is a guitarist himself with his own band. Nice one.

The debut album was very good, but they haven’t matched it since imo. For me the latest was the best since.
