Either band might be interesting.

Fat Possum Records is also where we first became aware of the Black Keys but they are more blues than rock. All this was around ten years ago, so I don't know what you are familiar with today.

We sometimes pick up Mojo and/or Uncut magazines. Their "free CD's" seem to be either very bad or at times have some interesting bands.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm listening to Only For You, by The Heartless Bastards right now. Good stuff.

I've got a load of Mojo cover discs(I bought that magazine from issue 1 though to 2008. Like you say, very hit and miss).

This song is great, though:

Big Heartless Bastards fan since I got James McMurtry's Live in Texas Aught Three about 15 years ago. Got to see them supporting Drive By Truckers on their last UK tour

Some of these have been going for 20 years but in the prog genre that’s fairly young I guess.

Anubis
Mystery
Riverside
Anathema
Sylvan
Moon Safari
Mostly Autumn
The Tea Club
Big Big Train (obvs!)

I’ve got many many more.

If it's not too much bother, Bob, could you provide a You Tube link to some of your favourite songs on this list.

Thanks.

I shall do that with pleasure.

Later...

See, this is the kind of thing I’m totally out of touch with.

I’m really happy with everything I’ve got, but I just feel it’s a good time for me to reconnect.

Thanks to son No. 3 for putting me on a new trail.

Here's an astonishing song you won't regret clicking on.

Khruangbin

I've had this mob on heavy rotation for months, mostly instrumental, surf-ish sort of thing

Wow, I enjoyed both of these tracks very much. Thanks indeed.

Great players and a very chilled vibe.

I’ll definitely be checking out more of this band, that guitarist is something else.

Black Midi, Fontanes DC and the Murder Capital are deservedly all over the best of 2019 lists. Black Midi turn out to be graduates of our performing arts school, which spoils the fun a little, and twats to boot, when they were on Mark Riley this week, but the songs were fantastic.

W.H. Lung are at the top of two polls from online stores, but they would only appeal to people who still feel sad that Flowered Up split up.

I don’t know all of them but there’s some great names in there Hightea.

One of my favourite videos is of Beirut doing Nantes with Zac walking down the old stone stairs into a basement where the rest of the band are playing - although he passes a couple playing brass on the stairs I think.

I’ll have to play it again....

Hightea: thanks very much for posting these links and suggestions. I'll take them one at a time. I've heard of War On Drugs, but never actually listened to them before. I have to say, i really enjoyed this song. Great playing and a tune to really groove to. Funnily enough, the bass player looks quite a bit like my youngest son, who is a guitarist himself with his own band. Nice one.

High tea: I really liked Kung Fu...great funk/fusion. Beirut, not so much, but Hiss Golden Messenger hit the spot.

Nice one. Looking forward to the rest.

If I get sometime in the next few days I'll post some more.
Glad you liked Kung Fu and HGM. Yes Beirut is a bizarre sound and band not for everyone but I love them.

Oh Sees: wow, what a load of fun! I would love to have been in that mosh pit when I was a teenager. But now?

Perhaps not.

That two drum set up reminds me of seeing Hawkwind in their Space Ritual prime Of 1972. Happy Daze!

Hi Graham. Thanks very much for your suggestions, I enjoyed all three.

New Wave is still alive and well in your universe, I see. Nice one.

The debut album was very good, but they haven’t matched it since imo. For me the latest was the best since.
