A new song I like! No- really new!

Postby Minnie the Minx » 08 Nov 2019, 13:53

I was driving home yesterday evening and heard this on the radio, and really liked it!
What's more, it was made THIS YEAR! It's rare that I hear a "new" song that really turns me on - so, this bloke, Devendra Banhart - is he worth exploring? I've been caught in this trap before -hear one song and go and buy an album on the basis of it, only to find it's not my bag at all. Do I just like this because of the sweet hooks and the obvious Nilsson influence or is there more?

A note of caution, because I think that song sucks. However, Devendra Banhart's early stuff is absolutely essential. His first album is really, really, cheaply recorded, a proper scratchy folk effort sung onto telephone anwer machines and the like. He had an air of naive genius around this point, all his songs were nonsense, but really compelling. He got stick for sounding like Marc Bolan, and for becoming quite famous quite quickly, and for having a beard before everyone else did:

1st album:

2nd album:

With bigger budgets, he started branching out beyond folk, and personally I'd only go as far as Cripple Crow, which is still a fantastic album:

I did buy the next album, and heard the one after that, but I think he kinda lost all inspiration. But obviously, if you like his newer stuff, you might disagree with me on that.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Oh, thank you! This is really helpful!
I have to say, I wished I hadn’t seen the video to the song I like because my instant thoughts were not kind - however I do really like that song.

Not a bad song, but Lou Reed. That’s what I hear.

I've taken the morning listening to some of these albums. I liked the first, though I could simultaneously understand what others would hate about it and how they would pick holes. It's a bit all over the place isn't it? Even down to some Daniel Johnston. But I liked it. I also thought that I much prefer his voice at a different pitch. Later songs I also enjoyed include " I Remember", "Never Seen Such Good Things" and "Won't You Come Home." Lovely.

I own a few albums by him. They're ok but his Marc Bolan voice is just so annoying, it makes all the songs sound the same.

Exactly what I thought.
It's an OK song but it doesn't really stick in my mind. Good to see him around still.

Couldn't get into that guy's material.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?
