It was 50 Years ago Today
1969 was half a century ago. What were the 5 best LPs of the ones I listed? If your fave isn't here, tell us what it is.

Trout Mask Replica.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Even if I left something out, just name the album you'd pick - that vote counts too. There's very little traffic on threads lately, but after a few days we'll be able to sort out what BCB's favorite albums of 1969 are.

Great work there Matt, really appreciate the time and effort. But, only 5 selections! Man, that’s really tough.
I’ll come back to this, but my Top 5 of a fantastic year are:
Abbey Road.
Let It Bleed.
Led Zeppelin.
Hot Rats.
In The Court Of The Crimson King.
May this thread fly.

Can anyone here imagine one recent band/artist releasing three albums that would all be considered career-defining within one 12 month period?
Buggered if I can.

Even if bands had that much creativity, it wouldn’t be allowed now until the first album had been rinsed to death.
Plenty of merch everyone. VIP ticket for the tour? No problem.

Essential:
Everybody Knows
Velvet Underground
Abbey Road
(probably in that order)
Other votes:
Monster Movie
Stand!
But could have been many others. Ayers, Dusty, all three Fairports, Let it Bleed...just for starters.
Pretty great year. No '67 or '68, but pretty damned great.
Probably would've voted TMR if it were there.

Not the "best" (by what standard?) but the five I'm most likely to play. I could add a second batch.
Abbey Road
Burrito Bros.
Allman Bros.
Elvis
Dusty

I wonder how many here actually have all of those?
I'm going to have to think this one over.

I mainly agree. I'm still not a fan of ... but not the hater that "Rich" attacked me for but that's water under the original CRF. Okay forgive me for sort of a private reference.
Only picking five is difficult but I have to give kudos to Matt.
My five choices are ...
The Kinks ~ Arthur
The Band
CCR ~ Green River
Fleetwood Mac ~ Then Play On
Blind Faith

Beatles first? Probably not mine, but not unexpected, and not way off-base.
Velvets second? Great! Nice to see.
CSN and Crimson next? Really??
BTW, I think I might own every last one of these in some format.

Re: It was 50 Years ago Today
At the time, Tendaberry, Live Dead (well, Dark Star, the rest of it not so much), VU, Volunteers and Beck-Ola. That's what I voted for
Some others i've grown to like more since, Let it Bleed, Unhalfbricking (well, Who Knows Where the Time Goes?)
Two or three I bought then, can't really remember why
And some terrible rubbish, quite a lot of it.
And of course, Trout Mask Replica would have got a vote if it was in there probably instead of Volunteers, which was the Airplane on the way down (although more fun than ...Pointed Head
But 1969 was more about being in love for the first time, getting accused of attempted murder, graduating, losing my love, and being horribly lonely at the beginning of my post-grad career. But the following year, I would discover drugs, and dissolution, and really got into some of these albums all over again

Re: It was 50 Years ago Today
I wonder if it wasn't the last truly great year for rock. Is there a stand out year in the 70s that can compare? However, I am not as much in love with Abbey Road as most are, and I can only conclude that it benefited from the years that went before, the cumulative, aggregate effect of Beatles being the biggest band in the world.
