Exceptional Bonus Tracks On CDs.

Postby soundchaser » 12 Oct 2019, 16:52

Case in point being The Notorious Byrd Brothers. I mean, I get all the internal friction in the band at the time, but how on earth could they have left Triad off? It's a remarkable piece of songwriting. I would have replaced it with Space Odyssey:

Well that's my view. Your examples?

It's a great thread idea!

Most 'bonus' tracks are 'penalty' tracks to my ears.

But the extras that always come to mind that are superb are the ones on Family's A Song for Me where they do tracks from the album but with different instrumentation. Robust stuff!

The exceptionally BAD tracks that come to mind are on Traffic's John Barleycorn Must Die where they are placed between sides 1 and 2 of the original album! Whatever was soem idiot thinking...?!

Lastly, and I know I am biased but, the vast majority of extra tracks on all the Jethro Tull tracks are at least as good as most of the original listing

Agreed a superb Crosby song - the CSNY and the Jefferson Airplane versions are wonderful too.

Often it is due to the original vinyl length restrictions but if that was the case I would ditch one or two others in Triads's favour.

Some folk, who know more than me, might suggest it was due to the risqué subject matter....(?)

I know C, but this was 1967: the times had already changed.

If you want my opinion, it was McGuinn being as big an arsehole as Crosby was and making an issue out of fuck all.

What album wouldn’t be improved by Triad?

Virtually every Byrds CD has bonus tracks that make you think “Why wasn’t this on the album instead of ‘_____________’?”

On the subject of the Byrds, Reputation, a bonus track on Sweetheart, is fantastic.

Taylor Swift's 1989 delux edition has three extra tracks, and two of them, New Romantics and You Are In Love, are tremendous tracks.

The Pogues - Muirshin Durkin, Whiskey You're The Devil, Rainy Night In Soho

Always liked Ferdinand The Imposter on Big Pink too.

Most interesting is possibly David Ackles; Five and Dime which rounds up just about every available cover version of an Ackles song. Standout for me is Harry Belafonte's take on Subway To The Country

Maybe. But I am sure I have read that Airplane got some resistance from their record label.

After all 'My Ding-a-ling' was banned and that was later than '67....!

Sub-standard sound quality live tracks irritate me like hell!

Who's Next & Forever Changes reissues had decent bonus tracks. Worth a listen after playing the original album.

He might mean me because of my Taylor Swift reference, but I assure everyone it is not trolling - I think Swift is genuinely really very good, if not brilliant, and the extra tracks I mentioned fit the thread. Then again, he might not mean me......

It is.

Apologies for any confusion.

Is he/she a troll?

An alias?

A blaggard?

I'm unclear of the terminology here...

Mind you, the troll did raise some excellent bonus tracks from Who's Next.

This is my favourite:
