What was the first box set you ever bought?

Postby Powehi » 05 Oct 2019, 10:05

Was playing my ancient copy of Bob Dylan's Biograph yesterday for the first time in ages. As I recall buying it as a Japanese import sometime in the late 80s, it struck me that it may well have been the very first box set - it was certainly the first one I can recall ever buying.

How about you?

For me it would be Tangerine Dream's LP-box set 70-80 which I picked up out of a library vinyl sale back around 1984 or so.

You know what, I don’t think I’ve ever bought a box set.

I would have been 14 but it's still no excuse.

Then on CD.

Mine was Atlantic Rhythm and Blues 1947 - 1974, on vinyl - 14 discs - and still one of the best compilations out there.

Pretty sure it was Clapton's "Crossroads". In the early days, there weren't that many to choose from. They were bulky and difficult to display in the shops, as they wouldn't fit into the longbox (remember those?) racks. So then they hit on the idea of making longbox format box sets, the first of which was the Byrds box, which I also bought.

Probably Pet Sounds, but it may have been Steely Dan’s Citizen box.

Same here but I bought it.

I have never been a 'box set' person - even for bands I love.

It's far too much music all in one place - even with stuff I know I am not going to be interested in (5.1 surround sound, DVD, dodgy sound quality live albums...)

There have been one or two exceptions

CSN box
UFO BBC box
Hawkwind box - LP replicas of the albums that matter, Greasy Truckers etc

I would never go over 5 or 6 CDs worth

The Wishbone Ash box was ridiculous - an astronomical number of CDs and likewise the recent Gong box

Give 'em to me one at a time (said the actress to the bishops....)

Biograph was the first one, at least in the CD age that is. Then there was Crossroads, the Allman brothers’ Dreams, and then Bear Family began their explosion of box sets. Beginning with the Jerry Lee Lewis Sun Sessions.

I was gifted with Genesis, the Platinum Collection and really want Zombie Heaven but I really don't purchase boxed sets as a rule.

Eric Clapton - Crossroads - 1988. A great collection, loads of outtakes, still one of my favourites.

This was the first one I ever had - given to me as a Christmas present.

The first I ever bought was this, no embarrassment about declaring it at all. Never really considered it to be a 'box' set though.

The first real box set I bought was this, great set.

Bought from JG Windows in Newcastle for something ridiculous like £10 as part of their Christmas sale sometime in the early 80’s.

Four albums. A bargain.

Are All Things Must Pass & Concert For Bangladesh considered box sets? If so the latter was my first.
