Gillan v Ozzy v Dio

Postby C » 09 Aug 2019, 16:48

Ok, they have all been in Black Sabbath but that's not the comparison.

I am not interested in who was the best Sabbath vocalist (I think I know, 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions!), but I am interested in goons' views on who was the best vocalist per se.

My vote goes to Dio - an incredible tour de force.

oooof factor 10!

You and why?

Ozzy’s such a massive tit, though.

Meaty, Beaty, Big & Bouncy. I went with Gillan, though. But it’s mighty close between him and Ozzy.

Agreed.

I would also say that he was mightily easy on the eye in his salad days :P

I thought Ozzy always was merely OK, very much subject to the surroundings he was in.
Ian certainly had the emotional range and could switch up vocal styles- Dio in comparison is much more worklike but his pipes have muscles on them.

Tough one. I may have to come back to this after some further listening and thoughts.

I think Gillan’s vocal on Child In Time seals the deal here.

Ozzy was perfect for Sabbath

Gillan, who has a better voice and more range wasn't.

Dio has the range and the versatility. As Iommi said, Ronnie was able to sing across his guitar which added a new dimension and more oofness.

Ronnie would have fitted into Purple too

For me it's Dio for range and versatility (although admittedly Gillan has the former in bucket loads)

Ronnie

I like all three
Gillan is the best live because he doesn't do the horrible adlibbing that the other two do.
I love Dio and I was thinking that he had the better voice in the studio, but he doesn't really.
Gillan could have sung on Rainbow Rising or Heaven and Hell - maybe even Holy Diver.
But Dio always sounded shit singing Purple and Ozzy era Sabbath songs.

Got to be Gillan.

Gillan is a much better singer than the other two. Neither of them could have pulled off his "Jesus Christ Superstar" performance.

Oh Dio is every bit as 'good' a singer and could toss a JCS in his sleep.
He doesn't have the top end scream that Gillan does, it's true
But he has more depth

Ozzy might have tossed off a half decent Judas actually.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot. My initial reaction was it’s Dio without doubt but the more I listen to Gillan the better he comes out. There’s more light and shade with Gillan and it boils down to who do I listen to most? I only really rate Rising, LLRR, Heaven and Hell and Holy Diver but could, and do, listen to all of DP and solo Gillan on a regular basis.
Ozzy is perfect in Sabbath but most of his solo stuff sucks balls.

Completely agree, except I've never listened to solo Gillan.
