Quasi-PSL, In Memorium. Johnny Clegg - Le Zoulou Blanc RIP

Postby C » 16 Jul 2019, 23:40

The usual PSL was going to be postponed for this week owing to others' commitments but due to the sad passing of Johnny Clegg I will be spinning one of his albums with Savuka.

If you are around pop in but it is likely to be just a listen for the main with very little text (as it might just be me!)

The White Zulu

A great man.

I'm playing the first Johnny Clegg album I bought in 1987.

A delightful album

It was at a time when I was 'dabbling' with African music.

I had a few - I recall The Four Brothers being a fave but Johnny always took the edge.

I loved the man's history.

Born in Rochdale, England an interesting childhood and background

My South African mate Howard was a fan too.

Howard was an interesting character - lived in Muswell Hill (expensive even back then), related to the Cadbury's family, pots of money but a heart of gold

Asimbonanga- beautiful

Howard danced like Johnny. Well nowhere near as good but he could have a go.

I recall the first time I saw JC was with Howard and Clegg announcing that somebody had stolen his dancing shoes.

He still did an amazing job though - a good voice, an accomplished guitarist and an incredible dancer

Hammersmith Odeon but I may be wrong

If JJ was here he would be swaying in a variety of planes

Difficult to keep still. Impossible I'd say

Scatterlings of Africa

The track gave JC an entry in the UK Singles Chart, reaching No. 75 in May 1987, and was featured on the soundtrack of the 1988 film Rain Man.

I love that 'African' jangly guitar throughout

And that penetrating bass in abundance

bouncebouncebounce

ooooofness by the shed-load

Sadly, after Howard became a father again with his new girlfriend he died.

Aged 59 I think.

Life's not fair

Oliver would be in his early 30s now.

I am sure he has inherited his old man's sense of fun!

The lyrics are generally political and 'Missing' is no exception.

That bass-line oooof!

A tasty sax break

Burning tyres on the freeway
No one in sight
Thre's a raging calm
Across the land tonight
Voice on the radio says
Another one's down tonight.
It don't matter anymore
Which side he's on.
Came to your place to see
If you're all right
And the shadows
Danced across the stairway
Flight after flight
And I was banging at your door
But you weren't there anymore
And the g-man stepped
Into the light and said
"this is war!"

Uzogijima -----------(you will run away)
Well I've got to get through
'cause I know that you are near the end
Uzogijima ----------(you will run away)
Uzogijima kodwa -----(you will run away but there
Awusekho umgodi------is no hole left for you to hide in)
Wokukasha
When the big wind blows
The tree falls down
But the reed just bends
You're missing

Roadblock…
