Of the genres that you collect, which could you live without?

Postby GoogaMooga » 14 Jul 2019, 13:42

For me, it would be classical. Got some 500 - 1,000 CDs of the best orchestras, the best recordings. Playing Schumann right now, a boring piano concerto, it does not engage me on an emotional level. Boring, boring, boring - but nice in the background when you burn out on vocals.

I don't have any classical because that genre is too large.

Otherwise I couldn't miss any. That's why I bought them in the first place.

Duh.

I suppose singer-songwriters, beginning with albums that are all original material.

I agree on not having classical, because I recognized early on that I'd be the type who would have 15 versions of "Carmen."

Just fifteen?

You were right not to bother.

I'm glad my wife hasn't spotted how many recordings of The Messiah I have, nor the versions of Mahler's symphonies.

If pressed, though - come on, you can do it.

Ha ha, "Carmen" is the only opera I've got in full, otherwise only the overtures.

That’s a tricky question to answer because I don’t collect stuff I don’t like, what would be the point? But I’ve dabbled with country and although I like individual artists it hasn’t really taken root. Nor soul, nor reggae, nor the labyrinths of world music. Basically I could be happy with rock, jazz and classical if we include everything* which falls within their broadest definitions.

* except Duran Duran obvs.

Oh, there are people who buy genres, Northern Soul being the most obvious example. But, you've got a point. Hoovering up uncritically was not what I meant, though, turn it around and look at the genres that you avoid, then it makes more sense. I think it is safe to say that I and many others collect many names within certain genres, thereby collecting or preferring certain genres, broadly speaking.

The narrower the genre, the more likely you are to collect much or all. Like I will buy anything within that narrow genre of Latin Boogaloo, for instance.

I could go the rest of my life without listening to one more crappy audience tape of a Who concert from the 70s.

I will still download many of them and never listen to them. I'm sure if it.

My kind of fun.

I found myself buying crappy live in the early days, Santana at the Matrix, that sort of thing. All on CD. But I soon tired of them.

The more abstract/harsh electronica, though I would miss some of it.

Danish Swing. It can all go. All except the Ib Glindemann section. I have limits.

I could probably do without hip hop, but I wouldn’t be very happy with life.

Alright then.

Electronica, everything they call RnB these days (as opposed to real Rhytm 'n blues), the whole David Bowie genre.

The genres I don't like, I don't buy.

Simple

For example, all that 'crooners' nonsense - Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Val Doonican et alia

I don't think it's that simple, C. I don't like techno, but even I have got a bit of Orbital and Underworld in the archives...

Accidentally, as they're on a compilation you bought for other tracks than theirs, or purpose because you want to have a catholic collection just in case you're in the mood for something?

The latter. Orbital was mainly for "The Saint", but Underworld I got a couple of albums by.
