Saw the old 1964 Polydor single of "Ain't She Sweet" in thrift, and argued with a local oldies dj whether this was the first vinyl release of said recording. He insisted it was, but I know they recorded with Sheridan ca. 1961, so I was wondering if not Tony had it out earlier, with his own name as top billing?

Off the top of my head I can't answer your question about whether it's the the first or not - but I can tell you that "Ain't She Sweet" was one of the four (?) songs from those sessions that Tony Sheridan didn't sing on - it's a John vocal. I'm pretty sure it didn't come out as a 45 until they were already stars.

Well, in that case, Tony wouldn't have released it, and The Beatles weren't recording under their own name until 1962 (?), so this 1964 single is in all likelihood the first, then.

I do know that Atlantic Records got hold of the Sheridan tapes and were releasing them in the states around that time, with overdubbed drums. These are the sessions suspected to be the ones Bernard Purdie played on, which led him to brag about "replacing Ringo on their hits "
