Caravan were more esoteric and possibly the vocals didn't suit many.

Caravan certainly didn't get the credit they deserved

The vocal sound is a great deal different, and Gilmour's guitar work is very distinctive and popular.

If there were justice in the world Caravan would have been more popular, but we could say that about many artists.
