"The Colour Of Love"....seems to attract rave reviews....are they deserved?

That album, arranged and produced by Charles Stepney, is absolutely terrific and worth your time.

Indeed. He's played everything from folk blues (his first album) to soul and things in between and I've enjoyed most of it but What Color Is Love is his masterpiece.

I really enjoy both What Color is Love and Occasional Rain.

I have seen The Color of Love album banded about everywhere on a billion threads in a billion places and thought today might as well be the day I gave it a listen.
Some nice melodies, in parts, but I found it cheesy in the extreme. It doesn’t seem to have aged well at all. Sounds like something parodied on The Simpsons.

I’m sure my view is not everyone’s.

Yeah I’m listening to Occasional Rain, which used to get hyped here and it’s ... not my scene.

EDIT: as soon as I typed that a song started playing that I liked so who knows

He is not for everyone, but i love almost all his records.

'You Goin' Miss Your Candyman' is one of my favourite tunes ever.

He made some excellent stuff more recently too, like 'Turn This Mutha' from '02's Speak Your Peace...

I had What Color is love but found a copy of Timepeace second hand on cd for a quid earlier this year. Bloody ace, super chilled. Have since gone and bought some others over the past few months.

Occasional Rain is superb, Lookin Out, not bad too. Haven't yet come across a poor Callier album. Timepeace is the one i'd recommend - came out 20 years ago.

I hereby endorse this view.

You wouldn't believe the negativity I got in a cup when I pointed out how teeth-grindingly awful the lyrics to "What Color is Love" are.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I Just Can't Help Myself was going to be the next one I buy, the last of the albums on the Cadet label, but I'm tempted to pick up Timepeace too now.

I don't really get the cheesy accusation, I dont hear any cheesiness at all. I think something like Dancing Girl has aged beautifully. Timeless even. I first heard it in one of the BCB cups I think, and was so impressed I ordered the album online immediately.

His 'Alive' CD is essential.

I was lucky enough to see him in a small venue and it was unforgettable. His voice was possibly the warmest I've ever heard, absolutely mesmeric.

EDIT: don't be temped to buy it on vinyl; it's much shorter, the sound is shit and the pressing quality atrocious.
