Woodstock complete (mostly)

Postby Muskrat » 11 May 2019, 01:53

Rhino is about to release a complete Woodstock Festival box

Previous Woodstock collections, starting with the original 1970 triple LP and continuing through a 2009 multi-disc box, cherry-picked select songs (or didn’t include certain acts altogether). By comparison, Woodstock 50, to be released by Rhino, has it all: every act and 432 songs, 267 of which have never been officially released before, for a total of nearly 36 hours of recordings, along with crowd announcements (“Somebody somewhere is giving out some flat blue acid,” “Please meet Harold at the stand with the blood pills”) and other sonic memorabilia from the festival.

And here's the ine-up

Keef Hartley! ISB! Two discs of Canned Heat! Ten and a half minute version of "Keep On Choogliin"! Two versions of "Wooden Ships"!

Sadly, we don't get to choose individual discs.

Each disc (except when there’s a lot of chooglin’) is a complete set. It’ll be convenient for ripping or if the label ever breaks it down.

Of course it's tempting, but it's the sort of thing that will get played once in full, then filed away, as far as I'm concerned.

Yep, pretty much like all of my other Woodstock purchases then.

Turns out there’s a 10-CD set that’s under $150. Sounds like a deal to me!

Here's the lineup; a condensed version of the full set, with every act represented. I'm sure it'll be available from other sources, too.

You have to supply your own mud and acid, however.

Can't see why anyone would bother.

The DVD i've got lasts three whole days as it is.

It certainly seemed to the last time I watched
it anyway.

I have the complete Who set, it's not the best Tommy show but it does have a certain angry quality that's kind of appealing. Even before Hoffman comes onstage... The version of Christmas here is downright harrowing.

I think I will be most excited to hear Sly and the Family Stone. There is only one live album, from 1968.

Sly's Woodstock set was released in 2009. Might be OOP now.

Well what the hell do I know?!?
I would swear part if the pr pitch for the 68 set, is that it was their first proper live album.

I think it was a RSD release this year as well.
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Credence is being released separately. Airplane has been out for quite a while. So at least there’s precedent.
