Pet Shop Boys let their core fans down

Postby GoogaMooga » 09 Apr 2019, 22:29

And who was it that bought all those CD's in the 80s and 90s? We did. And how does Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe thank us? By releasing an exclusive 4 track EP on 12" vinyl only, or as mp3 or streaming. Thanks for nothing! :x

I feel CDs are stuck in a weird limbo right now. For ease of listen/catalogue/whatever, digital formats have it beat, and on the other hand vinyl has a lot more allure for audiophiles and collectionists. I started my audio collection buying CDs and it's still the format I'm most comfortable owning, but I think their gradual disappearance is to be expected.

It could swing round again like what happened to cassettes. At any rate, the superiority of vinyl is yes and no. A good 20-24 bit remaster on CD will beat your audiophile vinyl. And no inevitable pop and crackle, nor distortion in the run-out grooves.

How does releasing in these formats let their core fans down?

It shows that they had all this pre-planned, therefore proving they knew what MP3 files were back in the '80s, years even before they were invented. I mean, duh!

By NOT releasing on CD, of course. They'll go to the trouble of releasing on vinyl, but not CD, which is far cheaper to press?

This is a non-argument. Yes, they are in their good right to not release on CD, but why. CD sales made them what they are.

Well, that is certainly good news, but then I can't understand why amazon does not list it as a physical option. They have only got vinyl listed there. It shouldn't be necessary to have to go to individual artists' sites to get the full picture.

CD edition is only available to those who order the 2019 edition of Annually, the PSBs once-a-year publication.

And there was the rest of us thinking the PSBs' success had something to do with the quality and appeal of their music.

Didn't they also "make lots of money" on the back of the various vinyl 12" remixes they issued in the 80s/90s?

Because cds are being phased out. Try and buy a new computer or car with a CD player in it. Good luck.

This new retail model offers a lot of opportunities, actually.
