The Grateful Dead: What is their most insipid song?

Postby Snarfyguy » 19 Mar 2019, 01:01

I've recently awoken in the morning to some really atrocious Grateful Dead songs that I haven't heard in decades, for some reason.

Like "Don't Ease Me In" and "Alabama Getaway."

How do I rid myself of these meddlesome, tiresome songs?

Any worse?

Dancin', dancin' dancin' in the street!

I pretend a good 2/3rds of their output NEVER HAPPENED.
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Pretty much the whole of their first album.

At least.

I was going to say "no covers" until I looked it up and one of mine is a cover.

As to Googa's point, COUNTERPOINT: the Dead were best when they wore striped t-shirts and had pointy boots.

but yeah, that debut's not much, IIRC

The Dead can be whittled down to the Americana of Uncle John's Band and American Beauty, both great albums.

^^^ I could never stand those records. Some of the songs were good live for a minute.

I'm more of an Aoxamoxoa fan, if anything.

Disclaimer: I lived among Deadheads and saw the band a couple of times in the early 80s, when I was more concerned with the dregs of "punk rock."

Anyway, first one I thought of was "Money Money" from the Mars Hotel album. Thankfully, a lot of Heads hated it too, so it didn't sully too many live sets.

I'm sure there were worse entries from the "Brent Mydland years," though. I'm not going to listen to those records (or tapes) again just to research it.

I stand by the couple I mentioned, critically lauded they are, too.

I'll post my response in about a year. So much dross to sift through. Perhaps the thread should have been "What's their LEAST insipid song.

First comment - F*ck off, the Dead have endless amazing songs and yes I'm talking studio albums!

It would be something from the later years like "France" or "From the Heart of Me".

The debut is prime pointy boot sound, though! That's garage rock Dead - you can hear the speed!

You've got to admit they've got some unfortunate earworms.

Besides, since when is it more fun to talk about things we like than things we dislike?

I'm not entirely sure whether their first LP was their very best, but by the mid-seventies they were simply tiresome. They were the driving force behind the "noodling on endlessly" genre.

You love them so much you can't even get the album title right.

Anyone who says Workingman's Dead and American Beauty are the only Dead albums you need can fuck rght off. Both great albums for sure but nowhere near representing the quintessence of the band. These are people who don't really love or get The Dead. Invariably the same people who think From The Mars Hotel is a live album.

As for the OP, much from Shakedown Street onwards but that's really fish in a barrel.

No, I personally need more, got all the studio albums bar one or two, and a fair number of the live ones, too.

So, in wat sense cam the Dead be whittled down to those two albums then.
