Terrible news. For awhile he made some of the very best music around. RIP Mark.

Very sad news.
A bit of a genius who walked away from the music biz. This is quite a shock.

That was unexpected to see today and absolutely crushing. His legacy is unquestionable, though. RIP Mark Hollis.

Very sad news. I suppose this brings an end to the hope that Talk Talk would reconvene as a band and make new music.

I'm gutted. Started playing Colour of Spring and had to stop, because it was too much. He made two brilliant albums of a quality that very few have matched - shouldn't really be sad.

Always liked them but on holiday in Italy in a hotel room in Milan. I put Spirit of Eden on my iPod and lay on the bed to just chill. It totally revealed its brilliance to me in a way I hadn't heard before. A very fond memory. Thanks Mark.

Shocked and saddened by this news. It's going to be a Talk Talk Mark Hollis day. It's cold and rainy so a perfect ambiance for the music.

Some beautiful music and such an expressive voice.

Ouch!
Most painful and unexpected musician death for a while.
A real talent.
Far to young to leave the world.

Re: Mark Hollis RIP
Wow, this is totally out of the blue. I had no idea of any health issue, but I guess very few did as he was such a private person. Only 64. He made too few albums but what he did release is some of my most loved music. Talk Talk's progression over the course of just 5 albums is simply stunning. Quit the music industry so he could be a good dad, and I'm sure he was.

Re: Mark Hollis RIP
Some great quotes on this interview JL just kinda pointed me at:
https://dervswerve.wordpress.com/2015/0 ... ranscript/
“Before you play two notes, learn how to play one note, y’know. And that, it’s as simple as that really. And don’t play one note unless you’ve got a reason to play it.”
“I like silence. I get on great with silence, you know. I don’t have a problem with it. It’s just silent, y’know. So it’s kind of like well if you’re going to break into it, just try and have a reason for doing it.”

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

It's quite moving to read the various tributes from artists and readers on The Guardian website. Initially I was quite surprised at the depth of coverage, but then it's not that surprising because those last few Talk Talk albums don't work like most pop or rock albums, they're more like a religious experience and once you've had the epiphany then they speak to you like nothing else.

Re: Mark Hollis RIP
Great musician. Weird, almost unique career arc. Early music was standard 80s synthpop, but with each album his confidence grew till he moved in his own strange orbit. This led to back-to-back masterpieces in The Colour Of Spring and The Spirit Of Eden. Eventually, he grew tired of the music business and walked away. A private man who at least got to leave his mark, and probably felt by the end he'd said all he needed to say musically.
I was saddened today and yet heartened by how much of my Facebook feed was full of posts about Mark Hollis. He mattered to a lot of people.

almost unique yeah, but there are some parallels with Scott Walker I think.
