Can you still like the art if the artist is tainted?

Postby C » 23 Feb 2019, 14:26

Article in today’s Sun which I read in cafe today. Rod Liddle says yes.

Glitter, Jackson, Cosby, Picasso, Rolf, Woody et alia?

Do you agree with Rod?

I do struggle with Quaco's albums I have to say.

I have no problem with any of those you listed above however

R. Kelly's just handed himself in, the dirty fucker.
Biggest R&B singer of his generation, man...big business regardless of what you think of his music.
(At least) 50 girls, I hear. Bastard.

I like a bunch of his stuff, so I guess that also makes me a despicable monster? I haven't tried to listen to him since the most recent accusations, though...

I think it’s entirely subjective.

Some people will be so repelled that they refuse to support the art. Others will be able to separate the work from its creator. Neither stance is right or wrong, they’re just personal reactions.

I will say though that I think many people, myself included, have difficulty consuming any works produced subsequent to revelations or proof of behaviour we consider beyond the pale. It’s a lot easier to reject sonethk g new than to disown something you know and like, I guess.

I certainly struggled to listen to the Beatles after I found out that Lennon voted Conservative

Well if want to impose 21st century values on the early 20th century (which I don't, but we'll run with it) then surely he would be seen as a victim of abuse, given he was a minor.

R Kelly and world music bobbins man.

There can be no mercy here I'm afraid. Only swift and brutal BCB retribution.

All music is SOMEBODY's world music, your grace. And I seem to recall a pretty lengthy "Trapped in the Closet" thread here in this very parish.

Art created prior to the misdeed, okay. Art concurrent with or after is case by case. But I am not about to measure minutely, I don't see a problem in appreciating great art while denouncing the person and the misdeed. You can get these "Free Phil Spector" T-shirts on ebay, that is going too far in leniency.

I don't agree that when it was recorded really matters, music is music that stands on its own merits. But part of that merit is the intention of the creator, so it largely depends if the context of the music shifts with recognition of the creator's acts. For my own part, I listen to music that is made by people who certainly project obnoxious opinions, sometimes in the music, and sometimes in writings and statements outside of music. I can quite easily appreciate the beauty of a Burzum record such as Jesus Tod, whilst acknowledging that the fella making it is a murderous lowlife who deserves none of anyone's respect. NON is another act who have made some absolutely stunning records, whilst being a neo-nazi tosspot. I wouldn't want any of my money reaching his pockets, nor anyone to approve of anything Boyd Rice said or did. But I can't deny the quality of some of his music.

Y'know, Rolf always came across as a but creepy. But Sun Arise is ace.

Not sure if I came to any conclusions there.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

My answer to the question is "basically, yes."

I've always said that if we got rid of all the records in our collections made by deeply flawed individuals, our record collections would probably be pretty pisspoor.
