The Staple Singers

Postby GoogaMooga » 10 Feb 2019, 04:07

Hard to believe, but The Staple Singers were formed way back in 1948. Mavis Staples joined the family group in 1950, when she was just 10-11 years old. Her and Pops were the mainstays. Pops with his bluesy guitar licks, Mavis with her deep voice. Other siblings were in and out of the family group. Mavis continues to ths day, now walking with a cane, and still has that commanding voice. Just watched the 2015 doc, "Mavis!", and really enjoyed the early gospel footage. No drums, but what Al Kooper calls "soul clapping" - layered clapping, very rhythmic, and quite different from just clapping on two and four. Sounds wonderful. Drums could easily have overpowered the vocals, and gospel is all about vocals.
"When the desert comes, people will be sad; just as Cannery Row was sad when all the pilchards were caught and canned and eaten." - John Steinbeck
