The Monkees vs Sonic Youth

I think the Monkees are underrated as a TV show and overrated as an actual band.
Sonic Youth might be a one-trick pony but it's a good trick - that big "airplane engine starting up" thing they do is pretty goddam amazing.
I always liked the Kim Lady's songs the best especially in the Geffen days.

I got The Monkees' "original album series set" a few years back (where you get five albums in cardboard sleeves for twenty bucks or whatever).

the singles are great. I'll even vouch for some "deep tracks" but JEEZ there are people who say "Headquarters" is better than the Beatles.

I never saw the Sonic Youth TV show until it was on Nick at Night reruns, but I loved it right away. Pretty subversive and clever, really - so much more than just a program about four scruffy sweater-botherers trying to make it as an indie band. The musical romp sections are always a joy, of course.

I am LOVING the idea of a Sonic Youth comedy show, set in gritty downtown NYC. Adventures with skeevy promoters trying to rip them off, oddball neighbors they regularly encounter on the walk up to the 6th floor. Steve Shelley is the secret genius who doesn't say much but has MacGyver like solutions for every problem they encounter.
