Motörhead: how much do you need?

Postby Still Baron » 24 Jan 2019, 16:28

How much is essential? The first four? Just the live record? Everything? Where do you draw the line?

Did you see them in their pomp? My step brother in law told me a story over XMAS about seeing them when he was 12 in 1981 or whenever in Bradford. I’m sure it was a formative experience.

I’m afraid I pretty much missed out on it all.
:x

Edit: only one live album in poll due to technological shortcomings. If others are necessary, write them in.

Probably just the first four. Certainly nothing after 1983.

I only really need the "Ace of Spades" single.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

"No Remorse" would do in a pinch.

Yes.

Same here. I respect them, it's just so far outside of what I listen to that I wouldn't notice if their music was wiped from the face of the earth.

All of them from Overkill in '79 to Another Perfect Day in '83. The latter is a great album.

Then onto 1916 in '91. And Aftershock in 2013 is bloody ace.

Compilation-wise No Remorse is an essential purchase.

its a damn shame Robbo from Thin Lizzy didnt work out in Motorhead as the album he recorded with them is one of their best.

So many of their songs sound like variations of Ace of Spades anyway you may as well just have that one song, which they never bettered.

But if you want to go further the big three - Overkill, Bomber and Ace of Spades - are the ones to have.

I have all of them. I need all of them.

Don't listen to the debut very often. And March or Die was kind of a weird point in their career, some not very inspired songs on that one. Other than those, I rate all the rest very highly. Very much agree with the praise for Another Perfect Day, a fantastic album.

Bastards is another one of those "lost" albums, I think it's fantastic. Came out on a weird label that didn't last long and was out of print for a long time.

I could listen to any of them on any given day and be made happier for doing so.

Bout 5 years back amazon were selling this set cheap for £15. grabbed myself a copy, i see now it goes for a pretty penny. All the stuff you'd want or need although does miss the better albums from the later years, Aftershock. Gave the vinyl of that one a play today, love it. Need to give their final album another try.

I saw them once on the Motörhead/Girlschool tour, circa 1981 at the Hammersmith Odeon, and they were excellent

the first 4 plus the live album is enough for me

Nancy is the expert

I felt as if I had passed some kind of test when I first heard Lemmy's voice and was able to tolerate, even respect its Cookie Monster-ishness. His has a smidgeon of melodiousness that other HMers either lack or eschew because melody is for pussies, right? That said, I saw Motorhead at Fuji Rock a few summers back and maybe it was the venue or something but the gut punch with melody I was looking forward to never came.

Then Lemmy died.

I saw them past their prime in about 1987 or 88. Every song they played sounded pretty much the same but I enjoyed it well enough.

I *really* only need Overkill, Bomber and Ace of Spades.
But I picked the debut and the live one as well.
Certainly nothing from outside those beyond a compilation, maybe.

I saw the classic line up live a few times. Iron Fist was the last time, though I saw them about 15 years ago at Brixton with the 4 man line up.
The Complete Elton John Mp3 set now available in the usual place, should you want one.
