The Psychedelic Furs are terrible

Postby Minnie the Minx » 23 Jan 2019, 21:05

Was letting a YouTube playlist run and run as I couldn’t be bothered turning it off and when I checked it had been playing the Furs for two hours. All of it ghastly.
Terrible aren’t they?

Some decent singles, but it all starts sounding the same after awhile.

Depends where you come in and where you drop out.

I think their 2nd album is pretty great, and the ones on either side of it are, with some reservations, good.

Outside of that, I'm with you.

I heard Robyn Hitchcock do "The Ghost In You" not long after the Furs version came out. I went looking for a RH version on YouTube and discovered that he put it on one of his albums a few years ago and it seems to be in heavy rotation on his setlists to this day.

I still quite like the first album. Not sure I ever gave the follow-up a proper listen and at this late date it's probably TOO late.

I did like the Forever Now and Love My Way singles. And Pretty in Pink was a decent Sweet Jane re-write.

But I don't know what they got up to after that. Likely nothing good.

I love them. Big love. Especially Talk Talk Talk & Forever Now. Even when they're naff (Midnight to Midnight), I am unwavering.

One of those bands who were not as good as I thought they'd be based on their name/buttons on friends' jackets, but I do like them. Probably they get worse the longer you listen to them, so 35 minutes seems like the absolute maximum dosage. Richard Butler's voice is quite striking. I like it a lot! Again, maybe after two hours, one might tire of it ...

I like them. I'll go so far as their first four LPs.

No, not terrible.

I liked them in the 80s but very rarely listen now.

I like all the first four, then it was steeply downhill....but their last (final?) effort, World Outside was very decent. "Don't be a girl" and this queasy beauty were standouts:

Workman-like post-punk. They get in there, play a rudimentary rock song with a hint of bombast, and fuck off again with no frills and no ambition. Proper Sunday league stuff.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

"Love My Way" is great, but I can't say I necessarily like anything else.

Those first 2 albums are ace, the first one is in my all time list of "post-punk albums containing sax greatness" - Sister Europe, Imitation of Christ, the cacophony of India and Blacks/Radio and who can't love 'Flowers' ? (My granny use to wash her dentures to that one, it was the redo of Pretty in Pink that finally did her in) The lineup with Morris and Ashton on guitar really delivered the goods. There's a lot going off in those early tracks; acoustic guitars meshing with the drums, cool effected guitar lines, dub bass and crazy, almost muzak-like, sax but they still had groove and space. Sister Europe, with the flange guitars ... Fab, just fab. I saw them just after the first album came out at Leeds Futurama and under Somme-like conditions they were easily the band of the day.

I didn't rate Talk Talk Talk as much, its got some decent stuff on it - Into You Like Train, Pretty in Pink, All this and Nothing. But they'd lost that harsh edge, the production was too smooth and they seemed tamed. I've got a Peel session recorded from that year and those versions beat the album versions to a pulp.

Really really terrible. The singer is a one trick pony , and after less than a minute I want to tear his vocal chords out with a fork.

Very good on their first few albums - lots of highlights, eg Imitation of Christ, Into You Like a Train, Forever Now, Dumb Waiters, President Gas, Love My Way etc etc. Then they watered down what made them good, in order to conquer America. But still very good live - or at least they were when I saw them a few years ago.

Plenty of worse groups out there.

Wanted to be Bowie/Velvets, but so did thousands of bands. If it wasn't for the John Hughes film, nobody would have heard of them. Not even as good as A Flock of seagulls. That is a sentence I never thought I would write.

The John Hughes film was pretty late in their career. They'd already had four fairly successful albums and a UK Top 40 single by then. (Yes, I had to look it up.)
