If you're like me, you basically have time for ALL the Spacemen 3. They got a little silly of course (though never approaching the vile crimes of the loathsome Spiritualized). But what really sends me is the hard, fake Stooges stuff. It's a shame Iggy Pop couldn't chill the fuck out.
This record makes me go crazy. It's ideal.
Sadly, the youtube sound isn't and really sells it short. So it goes.
They fucking well knew how to start a record. Is this their apex?

The sound of minimalist brilliance.
Their gigs were just sublimely chaotic and loud loud LOUD!
Sound Of Confusion is my go-to record of them too, the more diffused full albums never reached the same orgasmic heights.

WIll Carruthers' memoir is very good (I think it's called Playing Bass With Three Hands) lots of drug infused madness is related. Perhaps more detail about Rugby (the place rather than the sport, you won't be surprised to hear) than you really need though.
Personally I always preferred Loop's less gospelly more Stoogesy approach to similar musical territory.
As a 'gear nerd' though I have to say I admire Sonic's devotion to his ultra-rare Vox Starstream guitar. Its built-in piano like tremolo effect really defined the S3 sound. I have an EHX Pulsar (pedal) that can produce a similar percussive erm, pulse but not quite the same somehow.
the starstream:
Nice.

I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.

Solid also-rans in field of late 80's noise/stoner rock.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

I think those two first EPs with their demo-quality are superb. Pounding on what sounds like a shoebox and layers of noise. Exhilarating as hell.

Yeah. It’s funny that it never occurred to me how much it’s just a blatant Suicide ripoff. Which, of course, doesn’t bother me in the slightest! Excellent.

You just said you loved them! Which will it be?
Or do you just object to the early stuff?

Oh, I get it! One middle aged man is spending his time on the internet harassing another middle aged man because they don’t like the same music, and he’s taken the obsession so far that he’s impersonating the man he doesn’t like! And he’s actually taken the time to make an unflattering caracature of the other man he doesn’t like (and has probably never met) to use as his avatar! Halfwits, ahoy

Re: SPACEMEN 3
Brilliant stuff. I had to discover them the backwards way as never heard of them until I heard Spiritualized albums in the late 90's. Then dug into Spaceman 3. Then was surprised how different the early spaceman 3 was from the later stuff. Fan of it all!.
Don't get why so many don't like Spiritualized at BCB but love them too, even the new album is excellent although they have the same formula as past albums.

Don’t worry, HT, I think I’m the only one.
And I could come around some day.
But not today.

Certainly Pete Kember has been mentioning the influence of Rev 'n Vega in the past, paying homage on his first full solo album....

Re: SPACEMEN 3
They weren’t afraid to blatantly rip-off (or, erm, celebrate the strong influence of) their predecessors/idols, and their lyrics were mostly shit. BUT... I don’t care, and they’ve long been one of my favorites. There’s something about the incessant pulsing drone, perpetually being propelled forward, that has a trance-inducing effect that worms it’s way into my brain and flips certain switches.
I also like Spiritualized a lot, though!
