The greatest record of all time? Or merely Alex Chilton's greatest record?
This record has it all. Beautiful production and presentation, a pitch perfect message, and Eggleston cover art! I dare say that it was a way of life for me at a certain point in my life. Not a sustainable way of life, I should add.
Great covers:

Its certainly a masterpiece in my book. The Jim Dickinson production and the way its proud of all the mistakes , I love it, its always joyful to me to listen to it. A really special record indeed.

I support this sentiment. It is a beautiful shambles of a record.

He's upstaged by his drummer, though.

Re: Like Flies On Sherbert
I adore its messy majesty. Definitely my favourite record from his solo oeuvre, along with the ‘Bangkok’ 7”.
There have been a few different versions over the years, does anyone have a copy with more than 15 tracks? My early vinyl copy on the UK Aura label has 10 tracks, one less and in a different order than the original US release on Peabody. I’ve got a CD from 1996 on the French label, Last Call, that has five more including ‘Baron of Love’. I’m guessing that’s where the man who started this thread got his BCB moniker from, right Baron? (I might have read that, last decade maybe)

I love it, but when you come right down to it, a lot of it is just awful cover versions of old songs.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

You say that like it’s a bad thing.

Well, I would dispute the use of the word "awful." Shambolic, for sure. But beautiful in their own way.

And lest anyone think this was an aesthetic developed in chaos, check this out, from 1970. He was 19! He's always had that shambolic side, and it's always been charming.

A messy masterpiece, far and away his best solo work - although the Dusted in Memphis collection is a close second.

Anybody got a copy of the original lp digitized? I know the tapes we're in terrible condition when they made the official CD. In fact I was in the room with the tapes! They were visibly falling apart.

That CD was a mess, and not in a good way - tape drag all over the place. They shouldn't have put it out.
I've got the original Peabody LP somewhere, but not in digital form.
