Have Suede ever bettered their debut?

Postby Walk In My Shadow » 09 Jan 2019, 18:42

I don't think so but then I keep buying their albums because they're all in the same vein (the latest Blue Hour only cost £5).
They started off their career with a bunch of great singles (So Young, Animal Nitrate, Metal Mickey, The Drowners) before releasing their debut.
Even their B-sides double cd Sci-Fi Lullabies is worth having.

Any takers? Thoughts?

Did they ever make it in the U.S.?

I think you’ll find Dog Man Star is obviously better. ;)

"Coming up" had the most hits, but I like the one with the teens kissing, whatever it's called.

'Dog Man Star' is the best rock LP of the 90s. Ambitious, overwrought and packed with great tunes.

Great, but "Nevermind" is surely the decade winner.

Don't know all their stuff but Coming Up hit the spot at the right time and still holds up. Just the other day, the wife and I had it on, and we both were almost weeping, and she said "Honey, remember when music was good?" :D

I used to like Suede more at the time but now i’m very much more in favour of Dog Man Star.

The title track and the last four are truly epic.
The singles are pretty good too.
I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.

Coming up and dogmanstar both better the debut. The latest from last year is highly rated, havent heard it myself yet.

I'm not doing anything to help the consensus along here, but - yeah, Suede was the only one that really GOT me in the gut.

There's a character both to the singles leading up ("The Drowners" was the first song I heard by them, and to say that it hooked me would be a massive understatement) and to the more bejeweled and epic sweeping moments on the record (things like "Sleeping Pills" and "Pantomime Horse") that...oh, God, I feel a bit silly using cliches like "lightning in a bottle", but...here we are. I was certainly never able to get that anywhere near that kind of thrill from them again, but...if you hit that moment of synergy with an artist even once, you've come out ahead.

A nice mix of T Rex , Bowie and Roxy.
Saw them in Glasgow a couple of years ago after the "Night Thoughts" album came out.
Great show.
I like most of their albums and bought the first 3 on release and the next 2 on the cheap.
Haven't bought the 3 come back albums more due to the malaise of buying CD's than the quality of the music.
Some mother's talking 'bout Guns' n 'Roses
As if i give a fuck
At best i think they suck

They split up around 2003 after the flat 'A New Morning' LP, but reformed about seven years later. They've released three LPs since the reformation.

Didn't Brett Anderson release a couple of solo albums as well?

Not in my experience, excepting a couple of the "cool kids"
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

That assumes they’re spoken of, and they really aren’t.

They really passed me by. I only know one or two songs.
You come at the Queen, you best not miss.
