A giant. What i like most about Monk was his way with a melody; his best songs always seem so fresh and alive even after i've heard them hundreds of times. There was an inventiveness both in his writing and playing that always seems to surprise and bring fresh joy.

Sadly the clip is blocked here in the States. Here's an alternate one that is quite nice - the quartet in Paris 1969.

This one always fascinated me. Listen to that head! It's like half the chart has been stolen, but we still have just enough "evidence" to put together the chord changes.

A bit predictable but my favourite is 'Round Midnight.

Love Monk. Hate talking about jazz.

There you have it.

It's taken me a long time to realise that the reason I'm not wild about a lot of jazz is because of the trumpet.

Piano or vibes as lead instrument - I'm rocking in my rocking chair!

I 'like' Monk, and maybe one day I will 'love' his music.
I like its idiosyncrasies, but they can be the biggest obstacle too. Rather than just listening, I find myself 'thinking' about the music, maybe just a bit too much.
Definitely one of those artists that benefits from a degree of immersion, for me anyway.
Heyyyy!
