Re: RIP Pete Shelley
I remember buying Singles Going Steady on cassette in the 80s, and discovering that, if anything, their b-sides were even better then the a-sides. Shelley really had a special talent for memorable tunes.
RIP.

Yes. I remember buying "Are Everything" and it wasn't a hit and just thinking "why?".

I love that one but it doesn't change one bit throughout its duration (which is actually rare, even for bands who specialise in repetition). It's no wonder it wasn't a hit, G!

I don’t think in the history of BCB has anyone that I pay so little attention to, in the league of ‘Lord who?’ sort of thing, made such a stringent constant effort to alert me of his presence.
Ok. I see you. Hello.
What do you want?
I’m already married and I’m sure you have a lovely penis.
Anything else?
What the actual fuck is wrong with you, you weird old harpy?

Ah, man. I'm actually remembering how great they were (I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought they were a band you 'grew out of').
Martin Bramah posted something sweet on Fb - how the Fall supported Buzzcocks in '77 and how they paid for the Fall's studio time.

Listening to it again now, fuck me. Whata band, what a sound. it just blows me away like the first fucking time.

R.I.P. Pete. All these years later, the way you shouted "Stop fuckin gobbin!" in the Caird Hall is still ringing in my ears.
If I had to choose an absolute favourite Buzzcocks track, it would be I Don't Mind.

another reason it wasn't a hit was that they released a single a month for 3 months. unusual for a major label at that time

Yeah, it was the same when I last saw them in 2010. Sure he had lost a lot of his hair and the rest had gone grey, but he and the band seemed so vital and energetic, tearing through one great song after another. Him suddenly being gone just does not compute in my mind.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

RIP, Mr S.
Thanks for all the great tunes and the wonderful, wonderful gig you steve and the guys put on during a John Peel roadshow in the early 80s.

Just been driving round in crazy Austin traffic playing Buzzcocks as loud as the suspension could take. God but those are some tunes. Then I went for a coffee and the bar was playing Buzzcocks too. *big sigh

It is rare that athlete or musician deaths affect me very much. Maybe if they're younger, like Lennon or Cobain. Some football player deaths are tragic, with CTE being so prevalent nowadays - Junior Seau's suicide and Dwight Clark succumbing to ALS hit me kinda hard, By and large, they are part of my personal equation with these folks. Willy Deville hit me hard and Shelley's death are ones I've thought about longer. Shelley, because I loved all the stuff he was involved in from the get go and his age is relatively close to mine.
