The Wave Pictures

Postby Neige » 03 Dec 2018, 15:41

Very prolific indie band from Leicestershire, active for 20 years by now.

I discovered them a couple of weeks ago at a festival, more or less by mistake: the sound of Anna Calvi was so ugly and abrasive at the beginning of her gig, we wandered off to another, smaller location nearby. Earlier I had dismissed a video by the band as "whiny shite, to be avoided". But I was riveted from the first note by the band's humour, fun and instrumental ease, and by the songwriting skills of Dave Tattersall.

This Guardian quote from their Wikipedia entry is spot on:

"charming, witty pop songs shot through with Jonathan Richman's gawky glee and Suede's doomed provincial romanticism... They owe a certain debt to The Smiths, and Tattersall has Morrissey's knack of marrying the ridiculous and the sublime"

I don't like The Smiths, but these guys are my musical love affair of the year. Any takers?

The first and last tracks aren't bad (especially the guitar line to the first), but I'm not sure how much tolerance I have for that singer's voice. It's the kind of thing I think I'd have to sit through an entire album to see if it becomes grating or ingratiating.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I couldn't make it through any of those tracks for more than a minute because I really can't stand his voice. The music is quite nice if a little unassuming though.

:) I enjoyed the Brinks tracks far more than these! Not only do I dislike his voice, I dislike his words. Even if they worked as poetry, it would take more than assigning indifferent melodies to them to make them lyrics.

But if anyone is interested, the Roosevelt Sykes honey story can be found in John Fahey's book How Bluegrass Music Destroyed My Life. Presumably Fahey is the "John" mentioned - I don't know who Giles is. [edit: you can read the key portion of that chapter here.]

For what it's worth, I also like Stanley Brinks aka Andre Herman Düne very much.

Similar seemingly effortless songwriting.

I'm surprised by the tolerance I've developed myself. :P

Still waiting for the album produced by Billy Childish ordered via Discogs (the two 2018 ones I bought on the spot and via bandcamp).

Oh, and in spite of the lack of love and/or interest, here's a recent concert similar to the one I saw.

I thought they were a small local band from round here with a small following.

Didn't realise they'd been going so long and had so many albums out.
