Man, this one hurts. One of my favorite musical artists ever. "Willie and Laura Mae Jones" is one of the greatest songs ever written.

Friends and family say he wasn't sick, and they're in complete shock. Heart attack, apparently.

Official statement via Yep Roc Records:

It is with deep respect and admiration that we announce the passing of legendary singer-songwriter Tony Joe White, he was 75. It was confirmed today by his family.

With a prolific recording and performing career spanning more than 50 years, his songs traversed many genres, including blues, rock, country, R&B, and Americana, which is an incredible testament to his versatility as well as to his roots.

A one-of-a-kind songwriter, his songs were covered by Elvis Presley, Tina Turner, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Joe Cocker, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Ray Charles, and countless others

His newest album, Bad Mouthin’, was released in September 2018, and features a blend of classics as well as five White originals, including two of the first songs he wrote—just before penning his breakthrough hits “Polk Salad Annie” and “A Rainy Night in Georgia” in 1967.

“If there’s anything like a line connecting everything that I’ve done, I would say it’s realness,” says White. “Even my songs that are sweet little love ballads —those are all real, inspired by real love and real life. Being real, being focused on what’s really going on around you, is something I learned early in my life.”

Yes to all. And still...that voice. Not just the great singing voice, but that artistic voice. A singular talent if there ever was one.

The man who gave us Swamp Rock and a string of classics. Very sad and unexpected. RIP

Nashville Tennesseean obit

He was first inspired to write his own songs after hearing Bobbie Gentry's 1967 chart-topper "Ode to Billie Joe." Drawing on his own life experiences, White penned enduring classics like "Willie and Laura Mae Jones," which Springfield recorded, and "Rainy Night in Georgia," which has been recorded by Benton and more than 100 other artists, all before he turned 30.

Very sad as he was so active right up until the end - his most recent album only came out last moth

Have a 2 CD career overview in the car which I dust off fairly regularly. He played not far from where i lived a couple of years back but it was smack dab in the middle of a period when I was going to two or three other concerts and so had to pass up. There was, I told myself, always going to be a next time.

Sadly, that next time ain't ever going to happen.

Anyway, RIP, TJW, and thanks for all the great music

No, no, no, no. This can't be true.

I bought my first Tony Joe single in 1969 ('Polk Salad Annie') and !oved his music from then onwards. In 2016 I was lucky enough to see him live, and he was as great as I would have expected.

I too saw him live, at a small venue, just him and a guitar. He seemed to be a genuinely likeable man, good-natured and very relaxed in a small venue concert setting.

I was never a huge fan (out of laziness more than anything - I own 'Homemade Ice Cream', but that's it) but I do like a lot of what I've heard.

RIP

Sad news, I saw him play in a club in Ireland many years ago. Great gig. He had a sound of his own.

He deserved a place in the Hall of Fame just for Rainy Night in Georgia.
Another of those background songwriters that quietly achieved greatness, and held down a respectable solo career.

My wife was watching the Grammy Award show and saw that Tony Joe had died this year and then told me about it. I missed this thread I'm sorry to say and having seen him and his wammer jammer guitar perform live here a few years back, I am truly saddened to hear this news. It was easily one of the best shows I had ever seen, just Tony Joe and a three piece band and if anyone is not hip to TJW they are in for a treat. If you like CCR or swamp music this will blow your mind.
