I know them by name but never investigated further.
They're from the moogly woogly area when Incredible String Band, Gryphon, Jade Warrior were the better known names.
So, the likes of Carlsson, Mike Sargeant, et al.should be able to tell me more.
Should I start a new investigation?

Re: Third Ear Band
If you have no problems with fully instrumental music, you should definitely check 'em out. It's lovely music.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

To be honest, they don't seem like your kind of thing, Yves.
it's very out-there, hippy, avant stuff. Not that much in the way of song craft.
I never cottoned to them myself much.

Re: Third Ear Band
I'm a huge fan. My favorites are some of their more instrumental and raga-influenced work such as Alchemy and Third Ear Band (the latter in particular is fantastic), they're an absolute trip. For more vocal albums, I reckon the archival The Magus is very good too, and I love this track off of Roman Polanski's Macbeth soundtrack (which is brilliant on its own but would likely not recommend as an entry point into their work):
I would also agree with Chris that they're not a band you'd probably look into for song craft as such, but really, it's all about the mood and sound and groove and it's bloody fine in each. I would probably suggest either their eponymous or The Magus as a starting point.
