With the great vocal groups, it happens all too often that one or more members will quit for a solo career, often the lead vocalist. Some vocal groups manage to find good replacements and carry on, The Temptations being the shining example. But more often than not, the group will not be able to survive the loss of their main attraction. I don't think I've got any Belmonts without Dion, to name but one example.
Which groups in music history stayed intact and continued to have hits for decades?
Unlike many other performing groups, The Four Tops stayed intact from their inception in 1953 all the way to 1997, with the passing of Lawrence Payton. That's 44 years, hard to beat.
The Dixie Hummingbirds span 80 years, but I'm not really sure how long the original 1928 line-up stayed intact.
