27 Four Tops ABC/Dunhill single mixes first time on CD

Postby GoogaMooga » 12 Oct 2018, 03:00

Real Gone have gone and done it again: put out important music that has not been heard since way back when. As with those rare Mamas & Papas mono singles and B-sides, here we get all 33 of the Tops' singles for ABC/Dunhill, recorded between 1972 and 1978! The long wait is over:

I'm tossing up about getting this. This period gets forgotten behind their '60s stuff too often, and there are a bunch of fabulous singles like 'Are You Man Enough' and 'Keeper of the Castle' and 'One Chain', but the depth later in the decade kinda peters out to be honest.

It depends how much of a fan you are. With such a big name, I'd follow them to the end. A good chunk of those songs have not been on CD in any form or mix.

The closest I've got is this 14-tracker, no B's. First three are stellar, mid-tempo hits with strong choruses: "Ain't no Woman (Like the One I've Got)", a very nice paean to woman; "Are You Man Enough?" is quite powerful, heard in the blaxploitation film "Shaft in Africa"; "One Chain", with its universal message, is also a winner, successfully covered by Santana. It's been years, so the rest are foggy, but expect more of the same caliber.

I get the completest angle, sure, but musically i'm past the stage of needing to have every physical product by every group or solo artist i love; plus, i can't afford it in terms of both money and space. But i know for sure there are a bunch of really good records in there, so if you're keen i'm not gonna rain on your parade Googs.

Someone on soulfuldetroit.com has posted what they believe to be the tracklists ...

Disc 1

1 Keeper Of The Castle
2 Jubilee With Soul
3 Ain't No Woman (Like The One I've Got)
4 The Good Lord Knows
5 Are You Man Enough
6 Peace Of Mind
7 Sweet Understanding Love
8 Main Street People
9 I Just Can't Get You Out Of My Mind
10 Am I My Brother's Keeper
11 One Chain Don't Make No Prison
12 Turn On The Light Of Your Love
13 Midnight Flower
14 All My Love
15 Seven Lonely Nights
16 I Can't Hold On Much Longer

Disc 2

1 We All Gotta Stick Together
2 (It Would Almost) Drive Me Out Of My Mind
3 Mama You're All Right With Me
4 I'm Glad You Walked Into My Life
5 Catfish
6 Look At My Baby
7 Feel Free
8 I Know You Like It
9 Strung Out For Your Love
10 You Can't Hold Back On Love

12 Runnin' From Your Love
13 H.E.L.P.
14 Inside A Brokenhearted Man

There are lots of acts with short runs, like Love, Stooges, VU, etc. Those with forty plus albums, those albums usually aren't all good, so it rarely poses a dilemma.

I'd have to really really really love a band to get every last note, my only justification for buying "Summer in Paradise". ;)
