Guitar God Hank Marvin plays Oxygene Part IV

Postby GoogaMooga » 10 Oct 2018, 08:45

Hank Marvin is a guitar god, and this is as good as Jarre's original. Only a guitar god like Marvin could add something meaningful to a perfect composition like this one:

I've edited your post so the video appears. For future reference when using the youtube posting feature, only insert the letter code ( which appears at the end after =) of the youtube address and not the full address.

That's the only problem you found with the post?
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Well no as you ask..I thought calling Marvin a 'guitar God' was damning him with faint praise, I would've preferred 'titan of the universe'!

You are certainly correct about it being a great track from a very robust album and that Marvin is a fine guitarist.

Trouble is I am not sure the juxtaposition works.

Thanks for posting though - much appreciated

C, I think Marvin's clean, bendy Fender notes are a good alternative to the synth.

It's a very slight song for his robust guitar, to be honest. Jarre makes it work because of the synths and the backdrops he creates allow him to work around any shortcomings the melodic line has.
Hank is a craftsman but it's almost like he chooses to build a tree house rather than a mansion.

I think the simplicity is the song's strength, sometimes a tree house is all you need.

It's about lowering your standards.
I can't say I have heard any of his more recent albums but I bet they are filled with covers. Just seems a waste to me after setting a stellar standard in the days when he was still relevant.

Oh, he'll cover anything. I don't let myself be annoyed by it, though, he's got nothing left to prove. He can make the proverbial silk purse...
