St. Vincent - yay or nay?

Postby pcqgod » 09 Oct 2018, 16:43

I haven't really paid attention, but her performance on Austin City Limits was...interesting. What do you think?

Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

Madgett used to bang on about her when he went ultra-Guardian and seemed to only listen to vaguely tasteful alt-rock women for a while. Seems dull as piss to me.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Same here.

I miss reading Madgett's posts. Hope he's doing well.

He doesn't seem to be online much, his twitter feed is dead, but he occasionally posts on facebook. Pretty sure he's doing ok though.

I have Masseduction on my mp3 player, and I really enjoy it when it comes on. In fact I must have a listen to some of her other stuff. I did read she was doing an up plugged version of Masseduction called Masseducation for xmas release. I think King Princess is pretty good too.

She had a good radio interview a few months ago so I tried listening. Too intellectual and contrived for my tastes. And that doesn't necessarily mean contrived in a bad way. Just too thought out.

That's it, perhaps.

She seems talented and she has the knack of making songs with catchy hooks and lots of ideas in the arrangements, and I often hear one of her songs and think that's nice, I should check out some more... and then I never do.

Awful thing when that happens. I had a similar experience at a Tom Jones concert.

I liked the neo-glam visual presentation, and I liked what she was doing on guitar. It sounded okay overall, but I didn't hear enough to get a good sense of her as a songwriter, or whether the music would have any lasting value to me.

The one where she spoke of Pearl Jam's "Jeremy" video being a huge influence? Well, maybe she speaks of that in every interview, I dunno.

I dunno. It was on the New Yorker Radio Hour.

I think I was listening to Fresh Air.

Fuuuuuck. Now "Jeremy" is stuck in my head.

Please excuse me while I have a seizure .

Yay!

Interesting hooks and love her experimental guitar sounds (can see the Adrian Belew influence), very original. Annie also plays multiple instruments and am a fan of her arrangements and her lyrics. Love she also designed a guitar and seems to be an inspiration to up and coming women guitarists. I can also see how her sound would not be well received by some.

I really like all of her records, but I still think Strange Mercy is her best. If you can't get into that one, best to not investigate too much further.

Her 4AD sessions from that record hold up really well.

I really liked Strange Mercy. That album had some gorgeous melodies on it. But I haven’t explored much else from her, unfortunately.

I’ve bought her last three records. They’re all interesting and admirable in their own way but are ultimately rather cold and hard to love. The Sunday Times love her which probably says it all. Still, more yay than nay.

There is something very dry and lifeless about her records.

Have you seen her in the advert for 6 music?

VERY SLAPPABLE.

Rather embarrasingly I know nothing about her.
It's like a lot of modern music - tasteful, very professionally done and not very distinctive. The musical equivalent of those minimal cream living rooms you get in interior design magazines.
No one really needs this in their record collection do they?
