Spontaneous memorial marches in Denmark for Kim Larsen

Postby GoogaMooga » 05 Oct 2018, 18:35

The news spread in the social media in Denmark today, and this evening we are seeing memorial marches all over the country. Odense Cathedral had bells ringing one of his most poignant songs. Crowds carrying torches, singalongs, minutes of silence, this is probably the biggest send-off for any Dane ever, an unprecedented event because of the scale and spontaneity of it all. Could only have happened in our time.

Christianshavn, Copenhagen, Fri 5 October, 2019

That's pretty impressive. I'll confess to not having heard the name until five minutes ago. I don't know that his fame travelled outside Denmark.

Only Scandinavia and Germany. He did record a couple of English language albums in New York, but didn't succeed, although they are much sought after by diehard fans.

Copenhagen's Town Hall Square, this evening: Fans young and old bid farewell to Kim Larsen at a memorial concert. The artists were mostly young, but two veterans, Jens Unmack and Michael Falch, raised the bar with their stage presence. Also, the young boy who sang "Joanna" did a good job, brought a tear to my eye.

From the Kim Larsen memorial concert, Jens Unmack sings "Langebro":

The original from 1971:
