Artists/bands that could channel Beatles/Byrds & Stones
I was listening to Tom Petty's new collection this morning and realized how well he could channel the Beatles/Byrds and Stones. I was thinking of other bands who might be able to do this, and off the top of my head, I could only really think of the Flamin' Groovies who did both. Here are my examples with Petty. Now, I realize the pedant patrol will be out in force on this, but thought it might be worthy of discussion. Or not.

'American girl' off the first album is really written for the Byrds. It's pure McGuinn.

There are so many Byrds-inspired and Beatles-inspired bands, and so few of them end up anywhere close to the same echelon. (The Beach Boys are the other band EVERYBODY seems to try to imitate, with equally iffy results.)
I think this gets close to the Beatles' psychedelic period, without slavishly copying them --

It's like they tag-team each other. One of them comes along, lays a big, fat, smelly turd and then high fives the other one as he comes along and does the exact same thing.

Jangly guitar does not a Beatles/Byrds make.
Why are they getting lumped in together anyway? If I Needed Someone apart, is there much common sonic ground?

For not liking Tom Petty as much as you. Nice to see you maintain your sense of perspective Matt.

Without resorting to any harmonies -- the Byrds' trademark -- this manages to tap into the same well as those great Byrds dirges like "I Come and Stand at Every Door" and "Everybody's Been Burned". So much more Byrds-like, for my money, than the more obvious stylistic copies.

The Byrds have often said that they set out to merge folk music with the Beatles sound, to the point of seeing A Hard Day's Night and deciding to buy the exact same make and model of instruments (except for the bass).
"Quite."
