No, definitely not the one I was thinking of.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I've just checked, and it's not surprising I don't know any.

"Take it to the Limit" was their second biggest hit, it got to no. 12 over here.

Never could stand Seinfeld, myself. Just a pretentious Friends, with the worst character in sitcom history in Kramer.

Oh, stop it. Because the actor said racist things later?

No. I didn't even know/forgot about that. He was just a clusterfuck of lame slapstick stupidity.

They weren’t much of a singles band in the U.K., I don’t recall many TotP appearances, but their songs still got a lot of radio airplay. They were much more a US phenomena for sure. They are massively popular in Asia, their songs are inescapable here.

Take it to the Linit and Tequila Sunrise are two other songs I could have named if I tried harder. I don’t recall Witchy Woman though, I certainly can’t recall how it goes off the top of my head

"Off the Wall is better than Thriller" has become one of the most tedious music nerd tropes ever. It's probably true, but nobody needs to say it any more. Thriller is a great LP.

Bad is pretty good, too, for that matter.

That's the one with Whitney Houston's 'I Will Always Love You' on it...inescapable in its day. I wonder if it was also released as a single...if not that'd account why so many millions of people bought the soundtrack for a damn Kevin Costner movie.

The blunt fact of "the hugely popular album that my sister and her friends bought but that says nothing to me" has been part of how I understand my own taste since I first thought I had any.

So at first I'm tempted to say, "popularity, wow, what a concept."

But Darkness Fish et al. are right. There's something at work that flickers between explicable and totally arbitrary in a fascinating way.

That Celine Dion one, Let's Talk about Love, for instance. It's totally explicable, in a sense. It had the theme from Titanic. The whole compound was a huge campaign mounted by the culture industry. But then why did so many people, ordinary middlebrow media types, go on about how awful Celine was, make fun of her, etc.? She was a "safe hate."

Totally different from Thriller, which is different from the Eagles, or Rumours. There's no one ingredient: it's a special accident where marketing meets the ephemeral enthusiasms of media consumers/victims meet the distinctive, unpredictable traits of the product. As to the last, even Celine Dion has a distinct personality, as shown by that Carl Wilson book.

Without considering comps, for me Zep IV, Rumours, DSotM and Pepper's are the ones that deserve a place in there. Then I also voted for BiB because it feels nice, and I am the one that has voted for Bat Out of Hell.

There, I said it.

I love greatest hits compilations. Maybe I've read the room wrong, but it seems folks disparage those a little bit as not true albums. I think I know what people mean, but some of my favorite albums are compilations or collections of top selling singles.

Anyway, here was my list of what albums I think deserve it.

Thriller
Led Zeppelin IV
Legend
Beatles #1s
Saturday Night Fever
Abba
Sgt. Pepper's

I left off, but considered Adele and Eagles Greatest Hits.

I'll give you half a point, it's 'One of These Nights'. :D

This is becoming like the musical version of virtue signalling - "Oh, i can't name any Eagles songs! That's how much i hate them!"

Really, you can't even admit to knowing 'Tequila Sunrise' or 'Witchy Woman'? The gentlemen doth protest too much, methinks. ;)

I wouldn't know either of those, although I knew pretty much all those listed by TG-E. Why do you assume people would know them?

No Garth Brooks?
No boy bands? I'd have thought there'd be an N*Sync record on a list like this.
No Britney Spears, either.

Nobody needs to say anything about Michael Jackson records anymore.

Also, no record “deserves” anything.

All their albums before Hotel California were way better.
