I think I'd go for the fuller production of the second one Wolfie.

Some great choices...keep 'em coming.

It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Depends on the time of day (or night), plus your (erm) ever changing  mood, I'd say

I always thought the piano version was a great follow up to this on LP side A:

...like bookends (or something).

But you've got to hand it to Steve White on the up tempo 45, though. Great drummer

I've actually enjoyed this thread. I knew little of the Style Council and owned nothing from their catalog. I downloaded some songs based on the recommendations here. The Bacharachesque "My Ever Changing Moods" was the first one to sell me.

Headstart for happiness comes in a couple of versions as well - the acoustic version is superb.

The first two albums and accompanying recordings are easily the best part of Weller's career.

I have a different version of that on the 12” single of Money Go Round – it's one of the few records from my youth I managed to save. HSfH is the best of the three, I think. I never liked Money Go Round. The third track is Mick Talbot having a Ramsay Lewis moment (starts at 10:56):

Some fine B sides during their golden period - Piccadilly Trail, Party Chambers, It Just Came To Pieces..., Big Boss Groove, Spring Summer Autumn, Ghosts Of Dachau.

First album was great, both US and UK versions. That is all.

I love most Jam material. To me they peaked at the tail end and I see TSC is a part of that, albeit that tailing off at the end. After that I'd be hard squeezed to compile a 15 song comp of solo Weller.

"The Singular Adventures of the Style Council", the 1989 comp. This period of the guvnor's career has been criticized for being overblown and overly ambitious. As if you can ever be too ambitious. Better to be burnt by the sun than to never have flown, I say. Me, I am a sucker for meaty brass. And Paul Weller adds tons of it, as he weighs in with his jazzy, over-the-top, new-wavey arrangements. If you like Trevor Horn, you'll love this. More melodic than The Jam and smoother than Weller solo, Style Council remains my poison of choice, critics be damned. The BIG ONE is "Have You Ever Had it Blue?", which otherwise is found on the OST of "Absolute Beginners". Just one more reason to go comp with this bright pop duo. Sophisti-pop - hate that term, but that's what it is. Basically you tie your camel hair sweater around your neck, slip on a pair of suede desert boots, hop on the Vespa, and ride into the Martini sunset...
