You’ve got that exactly wrong. Had Weller made something nearly as excellent, it might be worth thinking about him as a viable option.

Indeed. Reed was an artist.

Weller is a crass thug.

Of course G is impressed by his clothes. Who could have guessed that he would be?

And he's harming his legacy (not that I would argue that he has one, but for the sake of argument...) by releasing these dreadful worn-out albums every fucking year. His 'soul' effort, or the one that came out a couple of years ago after he 'discovered' Bowie. What was it? Sonic Sounds or some fucking thing?

He's an absolute charlatan and it extends to every aspect of his miserable being. There is no joy in any of his excreta.

Limited? His songs actually reach people and move them and have for decades. We'll miss him hugely when he's gone.

Neither you or Baron actually like 'Metal Machine Music', so stop pretending you do.

Yes. He just sings about people getting their heads kicked in

I think I only like Metal Machine Music from Lou Reed's solo career. Not counting "Walk on the Wild Side", which is a stellar Proper Pop Song.

But I'd pick his solo work, excluding MMM, over anything Weller's done.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I actually do.
And my opinion of Weller has nothing to do with his clothes (about which I have never given the remotest shit in any context) nor his accent, which isn't remotely 'Cockney' (typical Welsh Gooner error), and is based entirely on my dislike of his records and the vacuous personality they reveal.
So there :)

Coat AND scarf, there's radical. I'll have to give that a go some time.
Care to give us a breakdown of the social semiology of the black patent loafers, white socks and rolled cuff half-mast trousers?
Not to mention a presumably able-bodied young man swaggering around town with a fucking walking stick

Rolled cuff half-mast trousers? If that was the case they’d be up to his shin ;)

They look like bass weejuns Ray, a very classy shoe. I'm not so keen on the white socks, but we all wore them in the early 80s.

BCB, where a band t shirt is considered acceptable wardrobe for a 60 year old.

Well, my dad used that term about anything that showed an ankle, but then again he grew up between the wars, when mild hyperbole was in fashion and men knowing or caring anything about clothes was a sure sign of homosexuality. ;)

And if your interpretation were true, that would not be a tautology, but a redundancy/pleonasm
