It's great but needs an editor.

Re: Electric Ladyland 3CD/DVD reissue
I think it's one of the few truly irreducible double albums we've got. (And before anyone asks: I fucking LOVE "Little Miss Strange".)
The only thing I'd change about it would be to try to get a better mix of "Burning Of The Midnight Lamp".

Oh good... I thought it was just me Charlie. That really is such a dull, thuddy mix. It sounds like the tape heads hadn't been c;eaned for several years.

Of course. Electric Ladyland doesn't need an editor any more than The White Album, Exile on Main Street or The Lamb pukes on Broadway, for fuck's sake.

Jimi:
“All I did was just be there and make sure the right songs were there, and the sound was there.
We wanted a particular sound. It got lost in the cutting room, because we went on tour right before we finished and actually cut it.
We were unable to spend time on it.
The engineers re-taped the whole original tape before they pressed the record for Britain and so much was lost.
Some of the mix came out kind of muddy, not exactly muddy, but kind of bassy.
I think it’s cloudy, the sound of it, because we didn’t get a chance to do it complete.
We mixed it and produced it and then when it was time for them to press it they screwed up because they didn’t know what we wanted.
There’s three-D sound on there that you can’t even appreciate now because they didn’t cut it properly. They thought it was out of phase.”

My point is not that the nudes are right - simply that they convey the feel of Electric Ladyland, which to me is mostly the long blues jam Voodoo Chile and all that side three nonsense, ie heavy, dark, smoky studio full of hairy musos, better than the photo used here.
What that conveys to me is not a bunch of kids cavorting on a statue in Hyde Park.
It conveys Stevie Winwood with stinky fingers. Probably as a result of canoodling with those grubby looking women.
I can understand that. You almost get a Performance vibe in there as well. My point was that the album sounds, to me, trippy and electric, which is why the US cover makes sense to me.

The US makes sense enough for the other half of the record - the side that isn't Steve Winwood's dirty digits

Playing this now. No noticeable improvement on the last version. Still distorts and hisses. The live record is a dud. I might give the out takes a listen , but probably won't. Very disappointing. Maybe the 5.1 version makes it worth the £50. I don't know...

I've been playing this a bit more , and the more I play it , the more confused I am by the running order. Side one is perfect, but I am at a loss why he didn't continue the vibe by going into Rainy day, 1983 and Still raining. Side three could then have been the short songs with side four unchanged but starting with House burning down. Having the stoned out stuff all in row makes so much more sense. And it stops the beautiful set of songs from Rainy day to Still raining being broken up.
And I think there is no reason at all to keep little Miss Strange.

Re: Electric Ladyland 3CD/DVD reissue
The second side has always been the poor relation, I agree. "Little Miss Strange" is dire.... I'm not too fussed about "Gypsy Eyes", and "Come On" and "Long Hot Summer Night" are good, but not great. The one track that may be great is "Burning Of The Midnight Lamp" but that is such a horrid, dull mix it almost negates the brilliance.
I'm guessing there are time reasons for the running order, but broadly I agree with your sentiment. If he could have found a couple of other songs to fill in the 'new' side three (what was available as singles/b sides from that era?) that would run much better.
