three more proggy efforts for non-believers

Postby Eddie Shah environment » 12 Sep 2018, 22:07

I've just realised how much Mike Ratledge looks like Anne Elk!

Coan pisses on the proggers once again. Does anyone care? His constant attention seeking is just so tedious.

Not voting as you've missed out the hit or shit option.

Shouldn't you be indulging in some unpleasant personal habit to the sound of a bootleg by The Fall?

I'm going to take this seriously as an intent to inspire serious discussion on the part of the original poster. Is there any reason why I shouldn't?

Anyway, Soft Machine is the class here, as usual. The GG starts out fine then gets all Crimson-y and boring. The Floyd's decent (Waters shuts up and plays his bass for the most part), but has less variation.

Yes, because you are feeding the most egotistical troll on BCB. You have to wonder why he periodically threadcraps in Prog Corner whilst making posts like this. I do wonder about his mental processes, as he often complains about the number of threads and posts about Prog on the board and then puts this up purportedly seeking others' views on the genre. John Coan, hypocrite or headcase?

Actually, his mental process doesn't interest me in the slightest. I contribute to the threads worth contributing to and ignore the ones that don't interest me.

Coan can be annoying, but nowhere near as annoying as the (numerous) people trying to tell me how I should react to him. I can figure it out for myself, thanks.

You're an odd case, PB. You really are.

"Proclamation" for me but I like the others. I liked the Softs better when they were psychedelic but that's a jam. I love "Axe" but I'm not sure I think of it as a "proggy effort". Gentle Giant is certainly not for non-believers but it's for me. I love those guys. I got "octopus" when it was new from a cool guy. His brother was a deejay and he brought home a bunch of records from the ''do not play this" bin and my friend knew I would like it. I worked my way backwards until new ones came out.

I didn't like "the power and the glory" as much but they certainly seemed to catch on around then. All the "Mahavishnu Orchestra" and Zappa type guys started digging them around this time. I thought it sounded like math but I like it even though I'm not crazy about math. I liked the albums on either side of this better - a little more straight forward and not as much math.

Oh he's both and lots more besides

I'll feed the troll...in order of preference:

1. Careful with that Axe - there so many versions of this available, some short, some long but always very, very listenable. Just a great moody jam.

2. Proclamation - no idea how a Prog non-believer could possibly like this and GG's lead vocalist Derek Shulman is a bit of a weak point for me but I like them well enough and occasionally they really nail it. Not sure they do on this track but it's a decent enough opener for The Power and the Glory album.

3. Soft Machine - I can never make up my mind with this lot but and enjoyed hearing this and it's inspired me to give Third a play later today. Coan is right about Mike Ratledge.

Soft Machine has the best track here.
GG- love their stuff and their style but this one is a bit of a mess.
PF-classic PF tune - excellent jam and cool images.
SM- I love this tune and the album. Great mix of rock and free form jazz.

Going with Soft Machine too but all three are good tracks. Power & The Glory doesn't get many spins here but it is a decent album. Eugene is always been a top tier track in Floyds catalogue but this morning I really enjoyed the Softs fluid trip.

Gentle Giant sound like a drunk singing over two bad Stevie Wonder tracks simultaneously. Only not good.
Pink Floyd are full on taking the piss out of Spinal Tap, "shwhhshhhwsshshs".
Soft Machine isn't too bad, but it's all a bit cramped in the jazz elevator. As much as the musical skill is there, I much prefer them when they did pop songs.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

You two have just given John two new aliases: The Original Poster and Most Egotistical Troll on BCB.
