Hit or Shit: Womack & Womack - Teardrops
A sizable top-10 hit in many countries around the globe in '88, 'Teardrops' was written by Cecil and Linda Womack, who also produced the track along with Chris Blackwell.

I was a big fan of 'Love Wars' which I bought on 12 inch. I liked this well enough too, just not as much.

I hated it at the time. It still sounds horrible.

I loved it at the time. It still sounds sensational.

It's another one of those tracks which I'd completely forgotten the existence of, and was quite happy to be in that state. I dunno if it's this youtube version, but I remember it being more energetic, and having a fuller sound. It's quite empty. Doesn't have anything about it at all. Disappointment ensues.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

You hear it so much now, its become symbolic of that late-80's pop sound that so many music makers have adopted in the 2010's. Ask me ten years ago and I would have said no but now I like it. Its come full circle.
The croaky backing vocals are unique.

If I've heard this before, I don't recall.
Don't like it much. If a song is this repetitive, it has to be pretty special, which this ain't.

Re: Hit or Shit: Womack & Womack - Teardrops
I voted "hit," but I first heard it in the context of its parent album Conscience which (two or three real clunker tracks notwithstanding) I was very big on at the time. This was not one of my favorite cuts on it - it sounded self-consciously designed to be the designated single - but Linda sang it real good and, you know, it was fine, whatever. I didn't know it had been an actual hit anywhere 'til years later (I may even have found out on BCB!), and I was surprised.

Yeah, the official YT video has a very lacklustre sound, no dynamic range at all. Here's a couple with better sound; the remix especially is nice and full.

Wow, I'd never realized before now that it had flown under the radar to such an extent in the States. I mean, look at the chart success it had in other countries...

Re: Hit or Shit: Womack & Womack - Teardrops
It’s wonderful. Love Wars is great too but the grit and stridency of its chorus leads me to pick Teardrops over it. They both have a groovy linearity that sounds very modern.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

To be fair: at the time it came out, I was living by myself, didn't have a television, didn't go out much except to indie rock shows, and pretty much the only radio I listened to was the local university station and the oldies station. I probably wouldn't have heard it at all except that I was working at a record store and we got in a promo LP of Conscience and happened to play it.
Baron, if you ever come across a cheap copy in your travels, you might try it - Side 1 is particularly strong.

A joy to behold.
You see, there are still faint glimmers of civilization left in this barbaric slaughterhouse that was once known as humanity. Indeed that's what we provide in our own modest, humble, insignificant... oh, fuck it.

Re: Hit or Shit: Womack & Womack - Teardrops
It wasn't instant for me when it came out but I grew to love it. Unlike Tactful Cactus, I don't hear it much nowadays so, on the rare occasions I do, it is still a bit of a treat.
Love Wars is great, too, but I prefer Teardrops.
