Double Fantasy producer Jack Douglas gave a lecture recently where he played a sort of "demo - first take unadorned - final master" composite sequence of several of the tracks ("Wheels" was one of them), and hearing them over a large PA in that fashion, you really got to dig them as "a compelling music maker quite engaged in his work" (the vocals particularly catch him in a unique place where he's really digging into his work - not in a POB kind of way, but...still managing to find all these odd hiccups and curlicues that sort of assist the urgency of the narrative).

Damn. I couldn't let this pass.
You've actually listened to and scrutinized her solo stuff.
You truly are a Lennon fan, Jim.
I wouldn't say scrutinized! But I know the difference between different albums and know which I like to put on now and again.

She was actually better than him towards the end. "Kiss Kiss Kiss" is far and away the best thing on DF and"Walking on Thin Ice" was really good too.

Lennon and Nilsson seemed to have followed a similar trajectory - anonymous studio collectives, syrupy production, enthralled with generic sounds of "the past", nothing much to say. And yet I love Pussycats.

Klaus Voorman has a pretty distinctive touch.

'Jealous Guy' is the only world-beater on the album.

Perhaps.
I love "Gimme Some Truth", "Oh Yoko", "How", "Oh, My Love" and even "Crippled Inside". Maybe not "world-beaters", but...certainly good stuff.
Some of them "growers", for sure.
The weakest moments on the record (I really can't get with "It's So Hard") probably diminish its overall stature, but...most Doors albums (to pick a group I assuredly love) have a similar percentage of music working against them

"Don't Want To Be a Soldier, Mama" has always been a bit of a slog for me. I know what he's trying (full on Spector-mantra), but he doesn't pull it off to my ears.

Yep.
I pretty much love every other track though.

"How" is a bit overlong too. And the title track is really hard to hear with fresh ears (though I do think it's brilliantly produced). And "It's So Hard" has a great groove but it's a bit slight.
I really, really, really like it a lot. It's great, but flawed, ultimately.
I know most here hate the "New York session player" slickness of Walls and Bridges (particularly the "Saturday Night Live" sax), but it has a much higher hit rate for me.

"Gimme Some Truth" is a world-beater, though.

Certainly my belief.
That the title track has, for me (and, I suspect, for many), lost any impact it may have once had is a fact of life. I'm incapable of judging it at this point - I do know that the sort of "skeletal lushness" of it (piano, rhythm section, strings, lead vocal) is an arrangement/production template I've certainly borrowed from, so...if it's good enough for me to steal from, I'm certainly disqualified from knocking it.

A journalist I used to play squash with many years ago suspects that Lennon wrote this song after he spent an evening with him and his mates out at a bar in Bermuda about 6 months before he died. He said the lyrics remind him of that night and the things they talked about (telling him he's crazy to not continue with the music etc.) and the bar had lots of spinning wheels on the walls or something like that. It's my favourite from the album.

One of the greatest ever, absolutely. And capable of expressing an enormous range of emotions.
It might not be a popular theme right now, but in that range and in that power, he expressed the pain of being a man. That's the feeling I always get from his solo work (and the Fabs' stuff from fairly early on, for that matter).

That's the kind of personal anecdote i'd like to be able to tell!

It was a good story, obviously he elaborated quite a bit when he told me. He and his mates had spotted Lennon in the bar and asked him to join them for a beer but he refused at first and left the bar, then he returned a few minutes later and said ok but no Beatles talk. They spent a couple of hours having a laugh and chatting about all kinds of stuff, not just music.
