Discovered under the Tallahatchie bridge?

Postby Muskrat » 30 Jul 2018, 19:37

"Capitol/UMe are proud to announce that on September 21, they will release the first major retrospective of this most groundbreaking artist with 'The Girl From Chickasaw County – The Complete Capitol Masters,' an eight CD box set that includes all seven of Bobbie Gentry’s studio albums sensitively remastered from the original tapes, supplemented by over 75 previously unreleased recordings including her ‘lost’ jazz album, outtakes, demos, rarities and an eighth disc of live performances taken from her celebrated series for the BBC. The release has specially commissioned cover art by David Downton and includes an 84-page book with a comprehensive essay by boxset compiler Andrew Batt, rare and unseen photos, eight postcards and a facsimile of her original handwritten lyrics for 'Ode To Billie Joe.'"

I like sensitive remastering. :)

I am so all over this. Even knowing that at least half of it will be crap, the rest will make up for it.

75 unreleased recordings! That must have bummed her out!

I would have turned off the tape recorder once it reached about forty unreleased recordings.

I just chatted with a former Capitol reissue producer on FB; says they tried several times in the past, but there was always something [unspecified] holding it up. Although of course there have been numerous one or two-disc Gentry reissues released through the years.

So far, no signs of a tour to support the release.

Delta Sweet is one hell of a fine album. Used to have all the first three (maybe four?) on vinyl

My most anticipated box since the Harry Nilsson set. This is really special. There's a thread on the Hoffman board and the engineer has been answering questions for all the dweebs who worry about things.

Surely they haven't found Mrs SB's missing set of dentures? Blimey, she'd given up hope.

I’ve posted this a time or two on FB, so forgive me if you’ve already seen the link and thought, “meh.” But I learned a lot about Bobbie Gentry from it and it got me interested in her later records. The guy who does this podcast can be a bit of a tit, but the good far outweighs the bad. In my opinion.

I'm still wondering about "Salome Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear." Everybody's reprinting the press release, so of course it's consistent; I haven't seen it corrected or explained (for one thing, if she wanted to make "Simon" a woman, she should have picked a name that scans right)

Reckon "Joanne" is the Nesmith tune? I'd like to hear her do that. (I think.)

"Circle 'Round The Sun" too.

I will say in Jim Ford's defense (re that Cocaine and Rhinestones piece, which was indeed fascinating) that the guitar riff that opens her most famous song gets used on LOTS of other songs from that period - one of which is "Niki Hoeky," which Ford DOES have a writing credit on, which, as far as I know, has never been disputed. So there's a chance that's where she got it from. Though the lyrics certainly seem like all her.
